About this listen

Dive into this rich historical narrative, complete with a special audio-exclusive author's note by Fiona, and experience a story of resilience, passion, and triumph.

Botanical artist Jane Saville is devastated when her manipulative mother banishes her to the countryside to protect someone else's honour. Isolated far from home, she is forced to live an impoverished, secretive life to save the family from public shame.

Guy Attwood is heir to a fortune, but prefers his quiet passion for rare-apple hunting on behalf of Royal Kew Gardens to building the family's business empire. He sets out to find a critically endangered apple species that he dreams of gifting and re-naming for his friend, the soon-to-be coronated George V.

When the paths of these people from two very different worlds collide, Jane begins to hope for a different future, but their new friendship is shattered by jealousy, misunderstanding, duty and treachery. A young boy will inspire Jane to defy the powers working against her and prove she is no woman to be outcast.

Set in the picturesque English countryside, in a forgotten orchard and beneath the ancient spire of Salisbury Cathedral, this is a heart-wrenching story about a woman who finds that in her darkest hour she can harness her greatest strength.

My favourite so far

I absolutely loved this story on all levels. I found myself listening any moment I could, I became quite entranced by it. Thank you Fiona, I love how you took this in the 1900’s and made it quite modern with a solo mother doing a fine job of raising a child.

Master class!!

One of those books that gets you hooked straight away. Wow… this book made me cry, angry and horrified by human behaviour. Very different from other Fiona McIntosh books they I’ve listened to and man, it’s worth the listen. Highly recommend this book.

Your best yet

As a reader of all your books. This one is now at the top of my list, bumping off the Diamond Hunter. I couldn’t put it down. It’s intriguing, wonderfully encapsulating and brings some home truths of attitudes, selfishness and how people jump to conclusions about others. Well done Fiona and I highly recommend this book to anyone reading this review.

Such depth in the characters and their surrounds

I was immediately hooked and could not stop listening to the point that this audio made its way through my day and night while I was doing my usual things. I listened in the car on my way to an appointment, with headphones on as I cooked and dare I say disappeared early to bed so I could continue. The rich descriptions of the places and the characters were vivid and I could picture them easily.

What a lovely woven story with characters that I cried about and along with so thank you for letting me into their world and their time and lives. Beautifully written.

Marvellous

Another glorious book from Fiona McIntosh. I was entranced from the start. Could not stop listening until I’d reached the end and conclusion . I was enthralled, along with being transported to another Era. Loved the strong Characters. This is about my 15th book which I have enjoyed immensely by this Author. She always delivers a Five Star Rating, along with the Narrator Katy Sobey who was incredible. Just Terrific.

Disappointing

The narrator was off putting as she kept snatching her breath whilst reading.
The story was predictable.
The recounting of facts and figures to pad out content was also infuriating.
A disappointing book from Fiona. I have enjoyed most of her work until now.
