About this listen

So apparently my mom was a witch. And not just a witch, but a witch who turned bad. My poor, sweet, normal dad wanted me to have a good college experience. Instead I get a magical offer I literally can't refuse, from the world's most elite school for warlocks.

Warlocks. As in guy witches.

Even though I definitely have lady parts, somehow I ended up at a warlock school to learn the gentlemanly arts (which are a lot more badass than, ahem, lady magic). Did I mention the witch world is stuck in the 19th century? Unmarried witches and warlocks barely see each other outside of society balls, which are still a thing.

My existence here breaks all the rules. Am I here for the right reasons? Or am I the pawn meant to destroy the very world I'm starting to love? When my magic proves stronger than anyone expects, and the school is attacked by a demon, I'll need help from the four gorgeous magical men who are willing to break a few rules with me. They're each forbidden to me in their own way, and the greatest danger of all might not be demons, but falling for them. All of them.

Contains mature themes.

surprisingly entertaining

I usually avoid books with such young characters as I feel icky reading about teenagers' love lives. But thankfully not only do they not remotely sound like teenagers (seriously who cast Troy Durant who sounds at least late thirties?!) but they don't act much like them either. It's surprisingly funny (except for the uncomfortable bullying bits). No HEA just TBC

A bunch of fun to read/listen to

I read all three books without stopping I found this so enjoyable to listen to. I always appreciate when an author can tell a good story, craft juicy relationships between characters, do justice to sex scenes AND have something to say about the world that matters - add some banter, humour, quirk and a little bit of ‘laughing at oneself’ to the mix and I’m impressed and happily entertained.

Cute pop-culture references and moments of ‘living in the Netflix now-normal person’ reality meets other/multi plane world fantasy made me chuckle out loud a few times. Female lead was refreshingly open and self aware, equal parts unassuming and confident, strong and realistically vulnerable - appropriate to the context and character. Love that the female lead is a gamer. I appreciated the integrity of the clearly distinguished personalities of each character with their own quirks, challenges, strengths and interaction dynamics. The relationships between characters were built out with equal integrity-balance, each relationship defined by its’ own delicious dynamics. Just little rumbles of jealousy between the males at the start (no MM and only a lil multiples action here n there)

Set amidst a good story I enjoyed the way the members of the group come together over time - I felt the anticipation and delivery were drip fed at a great pace - connections were drawn out really nicely over the three books- not too much too soon, nor a slow burn - with credible reasons why each new member is brought into the fold at time they do.

The sexual attraction, connections and descriptions of ‘the acts’ had just the right amount of inner world - outer world descriptors.

I also appreciate the intelligence that seamlessly laced a few socio-political and philosophical themes in to the mix - it gave extra solidity and depth to the characters, the world building aspect and the overall integrity-balance of this trio of books. Narrators did a great job, I take my hat off with gratitude to both of them and the author.

Definitely Not For Me

The narration is fine but i had to stop listening, it was too darn ridiculous. I enjoy fantasy stories obviously, otherwise I wouldn't have bought this book but they have to have some level of realism but this didn't. They have the option to send her to an all girls school yet they don't, even though they pronounce that girls can't learn the same magic. So, no point going to the same classes and they are so full, they can't even give her a room on her own. Instead choosing to place her with a guy who feeds on lust and gives off pheromones or something and she's ok with that? Surely Not. On top of this, every male in the school is a sexist neanderthal.

I don't know how women feel reading or listening to this book but as a guy, I found it pretty insulting and frustrating at the portrayal of Men.
