Couldn't finish this audiobook.

Looked forward to this but the narrator's cadence and bizarre mis-emphases in sentences just put me off.

Hostile world, adaptive people

I loved the way the story unfolded. At times I wondered about the species of the protagonist. Excellent world building. A lesson we may reach the stars but take the dark side of humanity along with us.

Good story but poor narrator

I enjoyed this study, but the narrator's odd cadence was very off putting. he emphasized the wrong words, all the time!

Original story

The story was original and interesting. Clearly, this is the step-off for a new saga.

The use of the term “expert system” has some baggage for me. It takes me back an earlier time when AI was once again flavour of the month. It means something different to me that doesn’t include the General AI that’s the focus of the story.

The narrator’s use of the same rhythm for short sentences annoyed at first but I’d forgotten about it by the end.

A good listen.

Wonderful story, woeful AI narration

Tchaikovsky’s writing is clever, avoiding cliché and one-sidedness in telling an intriguing and ultimately moving short story. The ambiguity of human potential and purpose, and of our relationship to machines, is laid bare.

It is ironic that such a story would be ground through soulless machine-generated narration. The same intonation patterns were constantly repeated, divorced from the deeper meaning of the story. I’m glad that I didn’t use up a credit for such an experience but if I were the author I’d feel insulted.

The Narrator Cadence Almost Ruins It.

Better to just read it, avoid the audiobook, it will only tarnish an otherwise good story.
