Publisher's Summary

A fatal blend of revenge and desire.

After leaving her fiancé at the altar and quitting her job as a Miami cop, Beau Hayley stumbles through life, feeling only resentment. Injustice. Loss. Her mom’s death was called an accident. She’s not convinced. Grieving, she becomes numb to everything except the constant, biting pain of heartbreak and hate. She can see no light. Until she meets James Kelly, a man who seems as damaged as she is, inside and out. And yet despite his twisted, cold façade, he stimulates feelings. Pleasure. He is a respite from her own flaws. A complete mystery.

And impossible to resist.

James Kelly has only one objective. Find the men who murdered his family and kill them all very slowly. But the web of crime and deceit leads him to Beau Hayley, the daughter of the notorious FBI agent who pursued him relentlessly until her death. Beau is not what James expected, and past the darkness that shrouds her, he finds a glimmer of light. Light is addictive. An escape. Beau might be the key to James’ mercy mission, but with dire consequences. So he has to decide - leave her breathing and risk exposing himself, or kill her and continue his mission, still unknown.

Two tortured souls playing one deadly game. But who will survive?

She is so insipid

Ok, I loved book 1 and I love James in this book, in fact I love all of the characters except for the MFC. The author made one crucial error, which was to set up the premise that suggested Beau was a female Bruce Lee, and then wrote the most useless, snivelling, pathetic female character I have read in a while.

All Beau does is whimper, put her head down, not use her brain, second guess herself and at every turn fail to defend James against some horrible claims that she knew were not true. I have read some books where the pressure facing the MFC are so overwhelming that this makes sense, but none of that was present here.

That then undermines what he claims to find attractive about her, which is apparently her strength. I hate this character, and if it was possible I would have reached through my headphones and slapped her stupid, and even though she is known as 'Lara Croft', she would do nothing to stop me.

3.8 ⭐️

I read a review before I started this that had said something about how he treats her and insists on wrapping her in cotton wool especially after she gets pregnant. And I have to agree. This started out with so much promise, I loved the concept and the storyline but the execution just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Look, I get the fantasy is the bad guy falls for the good girl and changes his ways and he looks after her but why can't we have a bad guy that falls for a good girl, that's not set in her ways and is more than happy and capable of helping the bad guy. Why couldn't this have been that? Why can't the anti-hero be willing to share his life completely with the person that's got his back instead of keeping secrets and hiding the truth. This is the part that really frustrated me- when all the secrets began to unravel James continued to not tell Beau anything.

The narrators were brilliant! I'll definitely keep an eye out for more of their work.

Yes, I'll read the next one eventually simply because the story isn't finished yet. But then I think I might be done with JEM.

Wow

This was a great read of intrigue. So many people after them, they didn’t know who was good and who was bad. An awesome read.
Narration was awesome too.
