About this listen
What Is the Difference Between Having Empathy and Being an Empath?
"Having empathy means our heart goes out to another person in joy or pain," says Dr. Judith Orloff. "But for empaths, it goes much further. We actually feel others' emotions, energy, and physical symptoms in our own bodies, without the usual defenses that most people have." The Empath's Survival Guide is an invaluable resource for empaths who want to develop coping skills in a high-stimulus world while embracing their gifts of intuition, compassion, creativity, and spiritual connection.
In this unabridged recording of The Empath's Survival Guide read by Pam Tierney, Dr. Orloff shares practical, empowering, and loving advice for supporting empaths through their unique challenges—and for loved ones to better understand an empath's needs and gifts. Here listeners will discover crucial practices, including:
- Exercises to identify where you are on the empathy spectrum
- Tools for protecting yourself from sensory overload, exhaustion, addictions, and compassion fatigue
- Effective strategies to stop absorbing stress and physical symptoms from others and protect yourself from narcissists and other energy vampires
- How to find the right work that feeds you
- How to navigate intimate relationships without feeling overwhelmed
- Guidance for parenting empathic children
- Awakening the empath’s gift of intuition and deepening your spiritual connection to all living beings
For any sensitive person who’s been told to "grow a thick skin," here is a guide for staying open while building resilience, exploring your singular gifts, and feeling welcomed by a world that desperately needs what you have to offer.

Am I an Empath?
Someone asked me 18 months ago if I was an empath. I googled it but I was not able to confidently say I was as I am not one to self diagnose. But after doing the quiz and working my way through this audio book my life all started making so much sense, I started understanding why I was so different and acted so differently to my family and peers... I am an empath. This wonderful book has given me so many new tools to protect my energy field. Thank you Judith for your work.

Helpful gentle guidance
Would you listen to The Empath's Survival Guide again? Why?
I have read Judith's book through and now I listen to a bit each day I can. I find it helps me to receive a little more information and reminds me about what it means to be an empath.
What did you like best about this story?
I was engaged when learning about the different kind of empaths and how they each play out and blend in together in life and even more in relationships. Also it helped me to realise how important having space and time for myself and that it is ok!
Which character – as performed by Pam Tierney – was your favourite?
I feel Judith Orloff comes across authentic, caring and wise and I could relate to her sharing of stories and different experiences
Any additional comments?
I have recently found out that what I thought was my 'weirdness' all my life is really about being an empath and found the content very helpful and insightful. Thank you

Good basics, there’s more to the story
This is a great guide for people who want lots of helpful tips & tricks for managing all the areas of life where sensitive people can thrive. It’s validating, but be careful not to confuse what is described as ‘empath’ behaviour with what could possibly be part of a more whole picture for people with other factors in life to consider as why they experience these sensitivities (e.g. hyper vigilance in folks with past trauma).
Good book to use in conjunction with other materials- but try not to make this the defining factor of your identity.

Really really helpful
This book was everything I needed and everything I wished I had a few years ago when I thought I was going mad, but really turned out that I was just an empath.
This book has been really helpful for me to understand more about my self and ways I can protect my energy when needed.
My only criticism of the audio book was that it ended really abruptly.
