About this listen
What if decemancy isn't enough?
Powerful forces threaten the stability of both the West and the entire world. The Eldemari's ambition, a descendant vanquisher: everyone is out for Ian's head. The odds are long, even with Euryphel's Regret and End affinities shifting the rhythm of war.
Ian must plumb the depths of a new area of magic, one he swore off years ago: the forbidden study of the soul—necromancy.
But first, he needs to find a teacher.

Pretty good, except for the ending.
I enjoyed majority of the book. Though I find the pacing a bit annoying as it speeds up and slows down trying to get all the action and character development whilst simultaneously skimming over meaningful character interactions and discussions outside of the plot. The follow up from last book was done very well, I enjoyed all the action and power usage this book had to offer. However, the ending was atrocious. Spoiler warning.
The plot seemed to be heavily focused on the decedent and Eldemari as prime antagonists with the story riding high from one encounter to the next driving forward Ians progression towards defeating and avoiding them. However in the end Ari had no depth beyond "Pathetic Mortal" and the Eldemari had laughable involvement in the actual book up until the end. With the title and ending of the last book I expected a war of wits and strategy. Both sides trying to outwit each other as Regret and Beginning practitioners employ crazy strategies to try and clinch the victory... However the war ended very quickly and there was little to no interesting moments involved in it beyond the deployment of death seeds. Don't get me started on the main duo!
In the background of this entire book the confusing relationship between Ian and Eury kept building and creating tension. Up until the end I thought things were going well, but the gut punch of Eury getting left behind / had his feelings ignored after all the character development and time they spent together left a horrid taste in my mouth. It felt to me like Eury was a convenient character to assist Ian in his journey and develop an alluring romance plot. But in the end got up tossed away like he was nothing. In the final moments of the book to! It just about ruined the entire series for me.
I personally don't think I can continue reading this series after this book, but I will still hold the first two in high regard.
