About this listen

Fans of Bridgerton will fall in love with this sparkling Regency romance from best-selling author Jane Ashford! The duke of Tereford is accustomed to getting his own way, but she's going to teach him a thing or two about love....

James Cantrell, the new duke of Tereford, has inherited a dukedom in disarray and is overwhelmed by his unaccustomed responsibilities. Then he gets an idea. Cecelia Vainsmede served as liaison between James and her father, and she knows a great deal about business matters, his own in particular. She's also quite pretty. Ever the pragmatist, he suggests a marriage of convenience.

Cecelia has always been good at working with James, but she doesn't understand how he can be so obtuse. He clearly doesn't realize that he's the duke she's always wished for, or that his offer is an insult. But when a German prince arrives in London and immediately sets out to woo Cecelia, James will have to come to terms with what he really feels for her. Is running away worth the cost of losing her, or will the duke dare to win her once and for all?

Enjoyable storyline

Quite engaging plot and an easy listen. ROSLYN LANDOR’s voice artistry is one of my favourites.

Can’t go wrong with Ashford/Landor combination

If you are a fan of Jane Ashford’s witty, light hearted stories and you have Rosalyn Landor narrating you really can’t go wrong. Thoroughly enjoyed this start of a series and looking forward to the next one.

Somewhat disappointed…

As a long-time lover of Georgette Heyer, I was excited when I discovered Jane Ashford as a possible author to follow in her footsteps - although in many ways anyone else will be but a pale imitation of this great Regency novelist! (Mary Kingswood is the only author I have found that comes even close to being a worthy replacement for Georgette Heyer.) I first read Last Gentleman Standing which I quite enjoyed, so I moved onto this book with high hopes, only to be disappointed. There were some good story elements and characters, but I found Cecilia’s 4 young friends a bit too much and the narrator’s voice grating. Add to this some (marital) bedroom scenes which added nothing to the storyline that could not have been achieved in other ways.

I will continue to try some more Jane Ashford books in the hope that I will find some more worth reading.

Untapped potential to be more than it was

The narration was excellent as was the writing style, and there was a good plot. I enjoyed the story for the most part and adored James for his caring ways with the Gardiner Family. However, I wish the last two chapters were skipped altogether as I really began to dislike Cecilia’s type A personality and feel for James. Instead, the words and pages should’ve been used elsewhere to flesh out other parts of the story. IMHO I suggest saving yourself the angst and fast-forwarding the last 2 chapters to about the last 5 minutes.

Had the potential to be so much more

The most positive thing I can say about this book is that I finished it, although afterwards I found myself asking “why?”The storyline has potential but the execution fell short.

I really did not enjoy the narration, either.

Dull & boring.

Enjoyed all the Bridgerton books but this one really missed the mark. I kept going to sleep listening to the dull characters drone on & on. Very disappointing
