About this listen
If you encounter the Black Wind while out there at sea, all you can do is race back to shore. There's no predicting it, no sailing it, no living with it. And if you're a Dempsey, it can play tricks on your mind. . .
On the Tasman Peninsula, nestled amidst the largest sea-cliffs in the southern hemisphere, is Shacktown. Here the Dempsey family have run a drug ring for generations, using the fishing industry and the deadly Black Wind as cover. But when thirteen-year-old Forest Dempsey walks out of the ocean, bruised and branded, everything is imperilled - because Forest has been believed dead for the last seven years.
Mackerel Dempsey, out of jail on strict bail conditions, is trying to change his fate, doing his best to keep out of trouble before his next court date. His cousin Ahab has renounced the family altogether, in favour of working to keep the town and its fragile tourism economy safe. But in their search for answers about Forest, both Mackerel and Ahab can't help but be drawn back into the underworld. What on earth happened to the boy all those years ago? And does it have anything to do with the infamous drug kingpin Blackbeard, who is rumoured to be moving in on Shacktown?
When secrets long thought buried at sea wash up on shore, generations of the Dempsey family must stand up for what they believe in, even if it means sacrificing everything. But in the gritty fight between right and wrong, blood isn't always thicker than water, and everyone is at risk of being pulled under...
From the bestselling breakout author of The Bluffs comes a heart-stopping new thriller set on the rugged coast of Tasmania about modern-day pirates, family bonds and betrayals, and the hidden dangers that lurk in the deep.

Phenomenal- yet again!
Kyle Perry has done it again! Another incredibly atmospheric, captivating story with every aspect thought through and round, flawed characters. And Jason Chong has absolutely done it justice with the narration! I would buy any of Kyle’s books without hesitation after reading both “The Bluffs” and “The Deeps”. This guy knows what he is doing.

Took me a while
Initially I struggled to get into the story but once I warmed up to some of the characters I found the twists & turns very well done.

Another "Edge-of-your-seat-the-whole-book" book.
Kyle thrashes another crime thriller into your mind, body and soul and leaves you wanting more.
Capturing coastal Tasmanian life in vivid detail, and accurately representing the lifestyle and behaviour of characters usually only seen from the inside of said lifestyle, Kyle's latest offering will have you continually telling yourself "just one more chapter" until you literally finished the book.
Jason Chong produces a solid performance as narrator, with distinct and clear annunciation for each character. His narration compliments Kyle's book like a cold beer at a BBQ: you'll enjoy both separately but they're better together.
As with Kyle's last book "The Bluffs", I'd have given it more stars but are limited to only 5. I think it's worth at least 6 though.

Not what I expected
This isn't my usual genre but I enjoyed it.
The story reads like a movie plot and I did guess the villain however it was still worth a listen.

A richly rewarding read!
Kyle Perry’s broken the curse of the dreaded second book! I loved this! So evocative and gritty, but with such rich character development. Just a great yarn. Will we read more about the Dempsey family in the future, I wonder?
