About this listen

Dark... A kingpin willing to murder to protect his dark web drug empire. A corrupt government official determined to avoid exposure.

Darker... A death in Minnesota leads detectives into the world of dark web murder-for-hire, where hundreds of thousands of dollars in Bitcoin is paid to arrange killings, beatings, and rapes.

Darkest... A video circulates, and the pursuit of the monsters responsible for "Daisy's Destruction" leads detectives into the unimaginable horror of the world of hurtcore.

There's the world wide web - the internet we all know that connects us via news, email, forums, shopping, and social media. Then there's the dark web - the parallel internet accessed by only a select few.

Eileen Ormsby has spent the past five years exploring every corner of the dark web. She has shopped on darknet markets, contributed to forums, waited in red rooms, and been threatened by hitmen on murder-for-hire sites. On occasions, her dark web activities have poured out into the real world, and she has attended trials, met with criminals and the law enforcement who tracked them down, interviewed dark web identities and visited them in prison.

Contains mature themes.

Horror

I want to start out by saying that I already had an in depth knowledge of 2 out of 3 of these cases. Considering I’m Australian and studying criminology with intent to go into child abuse so I’m surprised I didn’t know more about Lux.

Firstly, despite knowing quite a lot about 2 of these cases, I still think this book is great and frankly I can’t believe it’s free (at the time of writing). It’s clear Eileen has a great grasp on the concept of the dark web and I thought it fascinating to hear about her personal experiences, particularly with Basa Mafia.

In this book, Eileen shares not only the case as portrayed in the media, but in the case of Basa Mafia, her personal connection with the case and her interaction with the person behind the site.

I have read reviews on other sites that critique the narrator/narration of this book. I personally listen at 1.3x and had no issues with the narration sounding boring or anything. It may also be because I’m Australian and I’m used to listening to the accent that it was fine for me, since it’s all I know from daily interactions. I found that 1.3x speed is very easy for me to listen to, and I finished this book in around 2-3 days.

Overall I think this book is great. Eileen clearly has a great grasp and understanding of the dark web, I also had prior knowledge to the dark web and how bitcoin works, but I think Eileen does a great job with this book and makes it easy to listen to, even for people who don’t have the slightest idea about the dark web and how it operates. A great listen for anyone who is questioning what the future may hold for the internet and what is possible.

Great content. Boring Narration

I really wish the Narration was more enjoyable.
if anything it sounded robotic, you could fall asleep to it.

A Dark View

A most inhuman topic you can feel the shift in the book when it comes to darkest. Amazing research into a topic often too embellished by Hollywood.
