About this listen

Stephen King's epic fantasy series, The Dark Tower, is being made into a major movie starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Due in cinemas February 17, 2017 USA.

In this first novel in his epic fantasy masterpiece, Stephen King introduces listeners to one of his most enigmatic heroes, Roland of Gilead, the Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner, on a spellbinding journey into good and evil, in a desolate world which frighteningly echoes our own.

In his first step towards the powerful and mysterious Dark Tower, Roland encounters an alluring woman named Alice, begins a friendship with Jake, a kid from New York, and faces an agonising choice between damnation and salvation as he pursues the Man in Black.

Both grippingly realistic and eerily dreamlike, The Gunslinger leaves listeners eagerly awaiting the next chapter.

And the Tower is closer....

The introduction to Roland’s quest is beautifully bought to life.

The Darktower Series is epic. I was concerned that after reading and rereading this series at least a dozen times over the past 30 years, that listening to them read by another voice may feel strange or disappoint. But no. George Guidall presents Roland to the audience in a manner which will captivate. Brilliant narration of a very important opening book. In my opinion, the Dark Tower series is one of the best series of stories ever written. Thank you for bringing the Ka Tet to your audience, thank you for Roland and all he represents. Stephen King you are the King of story telling. You have remembered the face of your Father. Thankee Sai. ❤️

slow pace but encompasses a grand concept

Book one sets a slow pace but builds a world of real promise for future books.

the voice over grows on you. I couldn't imagine not having it the way it is. it could be grating at first. but it really is skillful!

Hard but rewarding

Narrated well, was confusing at times due to narrator changing voices during same character.

The story is a bit of a challenge, but stick through it. It builds up a dark but wonderful world and mythology.

Lyrical.

I’ve read around 15 to 16 King books now and this one strikes me as one of the most lyrical in terms of the prose. It reminded me a little of Blood Meridian or The Road by the great Cormac McCarthy. Enjoyable but not as addictive as some of his others.

I will return to the world of the Dark Tower but maybe not right away.

Nice Performance, slow story

My 5th Stephen King novel, probably my least favourite. Maybe my expectation was a bit high. I'll give the second book a go, yet I found this quite slow compared to King's previous works.

The Dark Tower 1

I liked it very much, even though I found it some what sad and disturbing, what an imagination Mr.King has, where did the story come from or to him, makes you wonder if it actually was,ha. Although many of the reviews of the narrator weren't favourable, hard to please some people I guess, I liked his voice and thought that he did a good job, I liked that of Jake and was sorry to see him go,as that of the narrator, who I believe has unfortunately passed away. it seems to me that these stories seem to impact more on people who have seen death and lost loved ones as I have more so, very good Mr.King
