About this listen

Audie Award, Solo Narration - Male, 2009

Dashing young Edmond Dantès has everything: a fine reputation, an appointment as captain of a ship, and the heart of a beautiful woman. But his perfect life is shattered when three jealous friends conspire to destroy him. Falsely accused of a political crime, Dantès is locked away for life in the infamous Chateau d'If prison. But it is there that Dantès learns of a vast hidden treasure. After 14 years of hopeless imprisonment, Dantès makes his daring escape and follows his secret map to untold fortune. Disguised now as the mysterious and powerful Count of Monte Cristo, Dantès seeks out his enemies - and nothing will stand in the way of his just revenge.

Filled with thrilling episodes of betrayal, romance, and revenge, The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the greatest adventure stories ever written.

Wonderful

Hours of entertainment! It's such a brilliant classic story of injustice and revenge. The reader was excellent.

This story has everything!

This is truly an epic tale of excitement, love, despair, retribution and finally forgiveness. The twists and turns kept me highly engaged from beginning to end. There is much detail but it isn't cumbersome, it's all part of the exquisite plan which brings a man who was at rock bottom up to dazzling great heights. And for me, it tapped into something reasonably primal, how far would you go to avenge yourself? I'm sure we all think about this and thankfully most of us can let it go, but it is somewhat luxurious to spend a little time thinking about what if...

A true classic

I was attracted by the theme of revenge and was not to be disappointed. Only being reading (or in this case listening) to this do I really understand the meaning of the saying best served cold. The plot displays vengeance in a pure art form achieved through patience and strategy while the conspirators have no idea what awaits them. Do not be deterred by the 47 hours, it took me a few weeks to get through it, but it is so worth it!

Beautiful story and superbly performed

I’d always thought I should read this book one day but never got around to it. As an audio book it’s just wonderful. The author I’d the ultimate word smith and the narrator made this a dream to listen to. So happy with this.

Very slow to start with but it was worth it if you can stick with it to the end
