Publisher's Summary
The new Victorian chiller from the author of Radio 2 Book Club pick The Silent Companions sees a teenage seamstress convinced she can control people’s fates through the clothes she makes for them.
Dorothea and Ruth. Ruth and Dorothea.
Prison visitor and prisoner. Powerful and powerless.
Dorothea Truelove is young, wealthy and beautiful. Ruth Butterham is young, poor and awaiting trial for murder. When Dorothea is asked to visit Ruth as part of her charitable works, she could not be more delighted. Her first encounter with a murderer will provide the perfect opportunity to explore Dorothea’s fascination with phrenology and test her theories that the shape of a person’s skull can cast a light on their darkest crimes.
But the story Ruth has to tell - of bitterness and betrayal, of death and destruction - will shake Dorothea’s belief in rationality and the power of redemption. Can Ruth be trusted? Is she mad or a murderer?

Can’t stop thinking about this book
I finished this book in record time and weeks later still find myself thinking about the ending. Excellent

Magnificent
Absolutely stunning book. Laura Purcell is brilliant and this is so incredibly good, I can’t recommend it enough. Incredibly well narrated.

A somewhat flawed Victorian story
The story is split into two characters, each narrating their own chapters. The concept is novel at first, but I got to halfway and realised I only really cared about one storyline.
I got the impression it was split this way to set up the ending, which was initially so unclear to me (and evidently to many internet users), plus even after reading the author’s explanation, it takes a real leap of faith that goes against the otherwise logical main story. What could have been an exciting twist just ended up a bit of a damp squib for me.
If I had the choice in hindsight, I’d listen to a better book.
