About this listen

The Convent is the shocking true story of Marie Hargreaves, the girl who survived an evil nun’s care home from hell.

When a fancy car pulls up outside six-year-old Marie's home in 1959, her dad tells her she is going on holiday. But little does she know she will not see her home again for four long years. Her family cannot afford to keep her at home. Marie tells the story of how she was taken away from a poor but happy and loving home life to live in a convent - away from everyone and everything she holds dear. Her hair is bluntly chopped, her clothes are taken away and her name is changed. Then a horrific ritual of physical, sexual and mental abuse begins. Even after the convent closes, Marie is unable to share details of her suffering with anyone. But when a police investigation is launched, Marie realises that the time has come to tell the truth....

the convent

very very sad story. I'm a catholic too and zm very disgusted that the nuns git away with this sort of behavior.

Very sad tale

Very moving you felt the child but I felt at times it left something’s unanswered having said that it was a very personal story to tell. Im glad you found forgiveness.

Painful to listen to.

I struggled to listen to it for it brought memories buried so deep, kept out of reach for years. I loved the calming accent of the readers. And her subjects struggles throughout her life as a young child. I am happy she eventually found Peace.

Sad story

This story was sad and true, it felt a bit long winded, and repetitive at times , but I still enjoyed the book!

Heart breaking 😭

The heart break, poor children. There's some Evil nuns out there.

As a Catholic (non church goer) and of Irish decent myself, I'm ashamed ! How can such evil 😈 be on this earth 😭😔😔😔

Horrific, Loving, Strength

Narration was great. A sad story in many was however the strength and love overcame it all. This story is now commonplace in life. I hope for peace in all the victims.

A reminder that we are stronger than we think. Recommend!

What a journey. The courage it would have taken to re-live this story to share it with the world is remarkable. It isn’t an easy read, but a gripping one and certainly something that ought to be widely known and acknowledged.
Trigger warnings include child abuse and poverty.

Would recommend listening in one sitting if you can so you can go to bed with some closure.

The truth be told

An honest true story of a little girls shocking abuse by those who were supposed to protect and care for her. Inspiring to hear her life play out & her ways of coping.

Sad Yet Uplifting

This is an uplifting story of a little girl and her struggle to survive horrible experiences most adults could not handle. Amazing.
