Publisher's Summary
1944. Paul Brandt, a German soldier, returns wounded and ashamed from the chaos of the Eastern front to find his village home existing in the dark shadow of an SS rest hut - a luxurious retreat for those who manage the concentration camps, run with the help of a small group of female prisoners.
When Brandt glimpses one of these prisoners, he realises that he must find a way to access the hut. For inside is the woman to whom his fate has been tied since their arrest five years before, and now he must do all he can to protect her.
But as the Russian offensive moves ever closer, the days of this rest hut and its SS inhabitants are numbered. And while hope grows tantalizingly close, the danger too is now greater than ever.

A beautifully written book about terrible times
This is a beautifully written novel, fiction but drawn from reality, full of tension and superbly restrained emotions. The characters, protagonists through to minor players are intimately described yet without becoming overly catalogued, just enough detail to feel as though you know them somehow. Such a terrible time in history, and this fictional story has taught me a great deal about parts of that time that I didn’t know at all. Like William Ryan’s other books (terrific!), this is narrated excellently too, This novel has left a strong impression and I can tell already that I will listen to it again, as well as eagerly awaiting more from this very excellent author.

A riveting story to the last page!
This is the best book I’ve listened to in years! I believe it is also William Ryan’s best. Real characters playing out a tragic drama as WW2 draws to a close. I was drawn in completely by the suspense up to the last page. Sean Barrett’s usual masterful narration makes it all even better. Brilliant!
