wow. humour, romance, action, mystery, angst
What an amazing saga. I've listened to Elin's works before, so I was excited to delve into this series. I found that Ms. Wyn has a clever simplicity to her craft. By creating some day to day banter and by skimming subtle chores and some post action scenes, it made it easier to slide into the plotlone of the next book.
What kept the pace rolling along is that,
like most, the 1st book is both world and character building as the descriptive writing unfurls bringing the story to life. Each Hero and Heroine have their own story and adds to the plotline as it thickens, getting lighter, darker, and scarier at various times.
I found the humans and their skills wove cleverly into the alien world, adding more ideals and furthering the complexity of the saga.
The idea of different species coming together to fight a common foe is nothing new in this genre and has echoes of other brilliant works. However, the storyline has its own unique twists and turns and definitely delves into some dark and scary places.
The pace in each book was well spaced, and the rhetoric was simply brilliant, giving each book its own life.
I admire the research Elin must have done as the chemical, botanical, archeological, and medical research was extensive throughout the saga.
Elin created different tones in each book. Ones that let me enjoy a simple romance, others with political platforms and one's where Elin throws me into explorations and adventures something akin to Indiana Jones crossed with Alice in wonderland.
All of the books ranged from humour and wit, lots of descriptive excitement, political parallels, sadness, and angst, with romance and steamy times.
When one dilemma is vanquished, yet another appears.
The 2nd half of the saga seemed to put aliens to the background and more political agendas in the human world, to the fore. Displaying themes like social status and xenophobia. However, there is still a good share of alien suspense. There were questions that weren't necessarily answered in one book but was revealed as thevsage moved on.
All in all, the complete works has it all. Angst, action, suspense, love, steam, romance, and wonderful dry humour, which is definitely indicative to the British and something I didn't expect in a space opera. Everything stayed as a mystery right to the very end.
I particularly enjoyed the underlying trope that bought this complete set to its finale.
The amazing thing I need to mention is how Elin Wyn manages to create each Hero and heroine with their own unique personality, which sets a wonderful pace and tone for each instalment. And to have Piers Ryman bring each character to life is beyond superb. His narration with his amazing voice accents and intonations only complemented Elin's craft.
