About this listen
In the spirit of Khaled Hosseini, Nadia Hashimi, and Shilpi Somaya Gowda comes this powerful debut from a talented new voice - a sweeping, emotional journey of two childhood friends in Mumbai, India, whose lives converge only to change forever one fateful night.
India, 1986: Mukta, a 10-year-old village girl from the lower-caste Yellama cult, has come of age and must fulfill her destiny of becoming a temple prostitute, as her mother and grandmother did before her. In an attempt to escape her fate, Mukta is sent to be a house girl for an upper-middle class family in Mumbai. There she discovers a friend in the daughter of the family, high-spirited eight-year-old Tara, who helps her recover from the wounds of her past. Tara introduces Mukta to an entirely different world - one of ice cream, reading, and a friendship that soon becomes a sisterhood.
But one night in 1993, Mukta is kidnapped from Tara's family home and disappears. Shortly thereafter, Tara and her father move to America. A new life in Los Angeles awaits them, but Tara never recovers from the loss of her best friend or stops wondering if she was somehow responsible for Mukta's abduction.
Eleven years later Tara, now an adult, returns to India determined to find Mukta. As her search takes her into the brutal underground world of human trafficking, Tara begins to uncover long-buried secrets in her own family that might explain what happened to Mukta - and why she came to live with Tara's family in the first place.
Moving from a traditional Indian village to the bustling modern metropolis of Mumbai to Los Angeles and back again, this is a heartbreaking and beautiful portrait of an unlikely friendship - a story of love, betrayal, and ultimately redemption.

Beautiful Book
worth a listen....
the narration of mukta was a bit annoying as the woman couldnt make up her mind about what her accent should be and many hindi words were mispronounced.

Beautiful, heart-rending book.
I loved this book! It was a very different storyline that brought out heartfelt emotion in me. The reader was also marvellous. Will look for more from both the author and the reader.

Engaging from the first paragraph
A really good story and very well narrated.
Infect the duration is the best thing about this book.
I did find one of the main characters very annoying though... I think the story was a bit loose around this main female character, her family and their actions. But it was still a really good read.

Confronting at times, but very thought provoking
*Spoiler* Whilst at times the Mukta story is very confronting, I found it to ultimately be uplifting. It also made me think a lot about the situation of women and girls forced into prostitution. I think this story is true to life and that some girls are just unfairly born into slavery. I enjoyed reading a story set in a world far different to the world I know. I would recommend this book, even though parts of it are disturbing and sad.

Very enjoyable
An enjoyable story overall with many heart warming and interesting experiences. I loved the character of Mukta, her humour and attitude to life, as well as the Indian culture anecdotes and positive stories/messages that are handed down through the generations.
In the latter half of the book some of the main character’s actions/responses were a bit over the top, perhaps annoying, just something to look past as the rest of the book is great. The narration was very good.

Beautiful but Heartbreaking story
Beautiful and well written novel. Voices of ladies reading the book added to the affect of the story. It was heartbreaking, but I couldn’t stop listening.
