About this listen

It's 1940, Guernsey. Vivienne de la Mare waits nervously for the bombs to drop. Instead comes quiet surrender and insidious occupation. Her husband is fighting on the frontline, and her new life is one where the enemy lives next door. Small acts of kindness from one Nazi soldier feel like a betrayal. But how can you hate your enemy when you know his name, when he makes you feel alive, when everything else is dying around you?

Average Historical Fiction

This book wasn't bad, the story captured me and I found it to be a pretty satisfying narrative as well as ending. It was also interesting, I have always been curious about Guernsey and enjoy reading fiction and real life accounts about the people who were stuck there during the invasion. The narrator frustrated me a bit with the performance of this AudioBook, she was constantly reading in a frantic tone (while there were moments in the novel to be read in a frantic tone, not all of it required this!) and I sometimes found the voice used for the daughters to be utterly annoying. It's not the best historical fiction I've read, but it's not terrible either.
