Publisher's Summary
The reason Homer Wells kept his name was that he came back to St Cloud's so many times, after so many failed foster homes, that the orphanage was forced to acknowledge Homer's intention to make St Cloud's his home.
Homer Wells' odyssey begins among the apple orchards of rural Maine. As the oldest unadopted child at St Cloud's orphanage, he strikes up a profound and unusual friendship with Wilbur Larch, the orphanage's founder - a man of rare compassion and an addiction to ether. What he learns from Wilbur takes him from his early apprenticeship in the orphanage surgery, to an adult life running a cider-making factory and a strange relationship with the wife of his closest friend.

enthralling
John Irving is a masterful storyteller. the story is so enthralling that you don't especially notice the quality of the writing. Well performed.

Glorious
Dare I say perfect? A preoccupation with pubic hair may be the only slight fault. Just wonderful.

Classic John Irving, well produced
This is a great listen for Irving fans. While not in my view quite on a par with Garp or Owen Meany, it is the usual sprawling, detailed world with eccentric characters and unexpected twists. The narrator is excellent.

Interesting "coming of age" story
The book touched on different ethical dilemmas that make you think "what would I do?".

One of my favourites!
I love this book. I read it when I was a teenager, and it always stayed on my top 5 books. I watched the movie and now listened to it. It is still such a beautiful story.

Irving is the best!
I’m amazed how so many people don’t know who John Irving is, when he’s truly one of the great writers of the 20th century. If you’re one of these people set the record straight and read this book and also The World According To Garp and Prayer to Owen Meaney (all available on Audible and all masterpieces), then start hunting down his other books and writings. It could be life changing! I read all his books 40 years ago and have retead them all in past year. If anything, they have improved with age. Magnificent…
