About this listen
In this gripping thriller, an ex-agent on the run from her former employers must take one more case to clear her name and save her life.
She used to work for the US government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning.
Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.
When her former handler offers her a way out, she realises it's her only chance to erase the giant target on her back. But it means taking one last job for her ex-employers. To her horror, the information she acquires only makes her situation more dangerous.
Resolving to meet the threat head-on, she prepares for the toughest fight of her life but finds herself falling for a man who can only complicate her likelihood of survival. As she sees her choices being rapidly whittled down, she must apply her unique talents in ways she never dreamed of.
In this tautly plotted novel, Meyer creates a fierce and fascinating new heroine with a very specialised skill set. And she shows once again why she's one of the world's best-selling authors.

An unexpected find
I think that Stephenie’s post Twilight books have shown her full range as an author. The characters in this book and their strange relationships with each other are both strong and crucial to a satisfying conclusion. Even the short lived characters elicit an emotional response from the reader/listener.
Both the urban and rural settings are described in such detail that you can easily visualise them. The action sequences are also easy to become part of.
The narration enabled the listener to easily discern one character from another. The pace changes depending on the situation and builds tension where needed.

Brilliant!
I have been a fan of Stephenie Meyers books for a decade. I’ve had The Chemist in my audiobook list for at least a year & danced around it, mainly because of its length. Well I can say, I wish I had got right to it way back then.
It’s brilliant, well written, with lots of descriptive detail that lets you “see” the story.
The ending was a surprise.

Did not expect to enjoy it so much!
The story started out slow, almost boring in the first few chapters. However things pick up soon after Daniel and Kevin came into picture. Towards the end I was just rooting for team Alex. Formidable heroine but what a great character!

Slow to start, but worth perservering
I found this book to be very slow. Lots of waffle at the beginning but it certainly got more exciting about a third of the way through. I persevered as I am a huge fan of The Host (by the same author) & thought I should give it a fair go. I am so glad I did, I really enjoyed the book. Lots of action and intrigue. The characters were really interesting. The narrator did an excellent job, it was easy to differentiate between the characters.

Amazing. Recommended!
Would you listen to The Chemist again? Why?
I normally don't listen to/read books twice. So probably not a good question for me. There's just too many great stories out there, I couldn't possibly spend my time on something I already read.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Chemist?
Oh wow. So many. The way her and Kevin met was amazing. Her finding out the whole twin thing. The planning and execution of the action in the book was so full on. I couldn't quit reading until the main event happened.
What does Ellen Archer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I'm always more of a fan of myself reading a book. Someone else reading it just always makes the book less than it could have been originally, for me at least. Ellen Archer was a great reader and great on emphasizing but didn't stand out from the others I don't think. At least she didn't have any annoying qualities.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes. A bit of laughter, a little crying but mostly just captivated. Got my heart pumping a bit faster that's for sure. Super entertaining book.
Any additional comments?
Great twists. Loved everything unfolding slowly throughout the book. I was a HUGE fan of Twilight and even more so of Host so I may be biased towards Stephanie Meyer but this was just as great as I expected from her. Please keep them coming Stephanie! <3
