About this listen

There’s a literary niche for all tastes including those who think that either Agatha Christie wasn’t funny enough or that PG Wodehouse didn’t feature anywhere near as many baffling murders as he could have. The Case of the Canterfell Codicil is a classic, cozy, locked-room mystery written in the style of an homage to PG Wodehouse. The result, for those familiar with Wodehouse or Jerome K Jerome and Agatha Christie or Dorothy L Sayers, is either an inexcusable offence to several beloved canons, or a hilarious, fast-paced, manor house murder mystery.

In The Case of the Canterfell Codicil, Wodehousian gadabout and clubman Anty Boisjoly takes on his first case when his old Oxford chum and coxswain is facing the gallows, accused of the murder of his wealthy uncle. Not one but two locked-room mysteries later, Boisjoly’s pitting his wits and witticisms against a subversive butler, a senile footman, a single-minded detective inspector, an irascible goat, and the eccentric conventions of the pastoral Sussex countryside to untangle a multilayered mystery of secret bequests, ancient writs, love triangles, revenge, and a teasing twist in the final paragraph.

Very witty read !

On first listen I was a bit overwhelmed by the constant banter, but, now I’m fully addicted to this author and love this series. I cannot wait for more of Anty’s adventures.

My new fancy

I am so glad to have discovered this series via the Audible Included catalogue. The plots are clever, the dialogue very witty, and the reader does an almost perfect job. If he can realise that "demur" and "demure" are different words pronounced differently he will gain my unqualified approval.

amusing and light hearted

Wasn't sure whether I'd like this, Wodehouse being just a bit too silly for my liking. thankfully this novel landed on the 'silly enough to be light hearted' side of the spectrum, rather than oh shut up Bertie you twat. I even laughed out loud a few times. the final paragraph was a bit dark, so no idea what to expect of the next novel. But looking forward to finding out. Christie x Wodehouse works here.

Very clever murder mystery

I've read some P.G. Wodehouse & this Fitzsimmons chap matches him very well, I would even say this plot is more complex, we could say a cross between Wodehouse & Agatha Christie.
The start of chapter 13, with his description of the incoming weather storm, has to be the best ever.
Recomend.

funny and entertaining book, well read. but the plot is a bit convoluted and characters a tad overdrawn with a slight bit too much witty banter. throughly enjoyable just....

Hilarious story, fantastic mystery

Navigating an ocean of cozy mysteries, one can drown in similes and long descriptions by sarcastic two-dimensional characters. This book is everything they're not: very clever writing in a hilariously fun tongue in cheek style, containing a satisfactory simile count, with characters you can form opinions about (and root for!) and best of all, excellent multiple locked room mysteries! The narration was perfect, I couldn't imagine Anty any other way. I couldn't put this down, am going to read the next one now!
