Publisher's Summary
The deck bucked under her feet, and she was hurtled backwards on to the bunk again, and the blast of a massive explosion ripped through the ship. 'What is happening?' she screamed.
Love in a time of war. Hope in a time of danger.
One of the greatest fighter pilots of the Great War, Michael Courtney is saved by the French noblewoman Centaine de Thiry when he crashes near her home. Soon after, Centaine finds herself alone and carrying Michael's child and must travel across the ocean to join his family in South Africa.
But no journey is ever simple, and a pregnant Centaine finds herself shipwrecked in shark-infested waters off Africa's notorious Skeleton Coast, a deadly swim away from the sun-bleached desert that will see her defenceless and alone. When hope arrives, she has no way of knowing if she will be saved - or left in greater danger than ever before....

A female heroine at last!
I Absolutely loved this book and it is my favourite Wilbur Smith book so far. This book was filled with adventure and I couldn’t stop listening to it. The main characters survival in the desert and her relationship with the couple she meets was incredible.

West coast of Namibia - a literary delight
Wilbur Smith does extraordinarily justice to the naïvety, skill, loveliness and brave earthiness of the Bushman people.
At the same time, I who have spent much time in Walvis, the Kuiseb, the surrounding sand dunes and dry (but very alive) desert am deeply grateful the author who has described the desolation, harshness, beauty, brutal awesomeness of the region.
Listening to this book brought back vivid memories of that land… oh so very beautiful if you have the courage to embrace it!
Bravo!

Maureen Muggeridge
Maureen Muggeridge was a pregnant women that found the riches diamond mine in Australia, the Argyle mine. I loved the way the Southern African story is told and the insight into all racial groups points of view. I have been fortunate to have been
to all these parts of the Africa and they are described to perfection. I was born in Kitwe, Zambia( Northern Rhodesia) been to the army in South West Africa and lived most of my adult life in Natal, so well done to you Wilbur Smith.

Loved this book!
This was the first in the “Courtney” series and I can’t wait to listen to the next!! More enjoyable than the “Ancient Egypt” series which were great stories but too graphic in the description of violence.

The best book of the series
Amazing- Wilbur takes you through the countryside of France and then onto Africa. It is a wonderful story that you feel you can’t put the book down for a minute
