About this listen

Philip Wardman had more than just the ordinary squeamishness where death was concerned. Yet he could hardly avoid the suspicious disappearance of his sister's friend Rebecca Neave, especially when everyone was ascribing the cause to murder. Philip's feminine ideal is the statue of the Roman goddess Flora in his mother's garden. His marble Flora doesn't fade, doesn't alter, and doesn’t die. But then he meets Senta Pelham, a beautiful, sensual, childlike actress who flagrantly disdains the morals of society and passionately desires the elusive Philip who thinks he has found true love. But darker forces are at work, and Senta is led to propose that Philip prove his love by committing murder.

Rendell at her best

As usual Ruth Rendell’s stories are a “page-turner” for me.
This one doesn’t disappoint

Overall

Enjoyed the story line, however relatively predictable. Terrible narration until I slowed it down considerably. The timber of the narrator’s voice was down graded and the intensity of trying to follow the story line became much more pleasurable. Will certainly listen to more novels.

Keeps you guessing

Another great Ruth rend-elle psychological thriller. Entertaining in its own macabre way - am always a sucker for British mysteries - no intense violence described, but the suspense builds very well without.

Terrific ordinary contrasted with extraordinary

Terrific characters woven onto the bizarre thru a clever simple devise. It’s always the simplest assumptions which spin out of control.
Compelling !

Not bad

The narrator’s fast pace and hard tone applied it for me. Cop out ending but otherwise a good listen.

boring orator

some stores need a cast ,if audible wasn't so tight 3 or4 actors would make it a pleasurable listen I could listen without constantly thinking "now who is that supposed to be " audible is charging premium rates and giving the cheapest performance, and now I cannot find purchase history to return it . also audibĺe app keeps stopping,
