كان لأحد رعاة الغنم طفلان؛ بنتٌ وابن، وحينما جلس على الفراش وحضره الموت نظر إلى ولديه وقال لهما وهو حزينٌ على فراقهما:

"إنّي لم أترك لكما إلّا بيتًا صغيرًا وثلاث نعجات، فاقسماهما بينكما كما تحبان، واحذرا أن تتخاصما من أجل القسمة مهما تكن الأحوال"

وبعد وفاة الأب اقتسموا فأخذت البنت البيت وأخذ الابن الثلاث نعجات وودع أخته وذهب لكى يبحث عن حظه فى هذا العالم الواسع ، فما كان منه إلا أن انطلق في بلاد الله فقابل الرجل العجوز الذى غير مجرى حياته بعدما بادله الثلاث نعجات بثلاث كلاب!! ولكنها كانت ليست كغيرها من الكلاب.

فكيف استعمل الراعى الكلاب، وكيف استطاع أن ينقذ الأميرة من الوحش ، ولماذا أصر أن لا يرجع معها ووعدها بأن يعود بعد ثلاث سنين ؟!
