The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything―everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt’s Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome’s got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter.
Cussy’s not only a book woman, however; she’s also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy’s family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble. If Cussy wants to bring the joy of books to the hill folks, she’s going to have to confront prejudice as old as the Appalachias and suspicion as deep as the holler.
Inspired by the true blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the brave and dedicated Kentucky Pack Horse library service of the 1930s, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a story of raw courage, fierce strength, and one woman’s belief that books can carry us anywhere―even back home.

Such an interesting insight
Loved the characters and the different ways that they lived. Hard to imagine living through that era and even harder to believe it is rather recent history. Loved it - hope there is a carry forward book - would luv to know how they all got on - Lizzy 💐

What a wonderful story. Will listen to again. I loved the rich, strong portrayal of Cussy Mary. Looked up the history of the Blue people. Thought provoking story.

A mesmerising story from the outset.
I loved this book (audiobook). An easy listen about a persecuted heroine and her mule who were thoroughly likable. Fascinating detail about 1930s life in the Kentucky hills and a rare breed if people, this story will stay with me for a long time. Excellent narration with the right accent made it all the more memorable.

Great Story with factual background
I had no knowledge of the Blue people. This was a great story, obviously well thought out and researched, yet it was an entertaining listen. Right amount of moments of joy to balance out the gloom of the sad lives of the dirt poor folk.
Narrator did a wonderful job and had just the right amount of twang!
Happy to recommend this one.

Wonderful historical novel
Excellent!!! Based in the Appalacians during the depression years this amazing novel was a revelation. I had no idea people lived like this.. . that the blue skinned folk even existed, nor the pack-horse library ... as it helped to spread literacy amongst remote people who lived in shocking poverty. Its emotional but the message is about love, tolerance and the drive for positive change. . A brilliant listen. 10/10. Thank you Audible!!!

A little bit of history
Loved this book, was going to read the Giver of stars, similar storyline, but choose this instead, glad I did. Beautifully narrated, easy listening and interesting story. Just had to Google Blue people when I’d finished.

A sad story of ferociously brave woman.
Based on true happenings of the Blue peoples lives, I had a great picture of where Blewitt rode on her wonderful ol mule and the people and places she ventured into. The toughness of the people she cared for on her book round was described rather tenderly. Such short sighted narrow mindedness in the human race has and still does cause so much pain and misery.
