About this listen
Mordecai’s simple life as the son of a blacksmith is transformed by the discovery of his magical birthright.
As he journeys to understand the power within him he is drawn into a dangerous plot to destroy the Duke of Lancaster and undermine the Kingdom of Lothion. Love and treachery combine to embroil him in events he was never prepared to face. What he uncovers will change his understanding of the past, and alter the future of those around him.

A simplistic and cliche story
Having listened to another series by Michael G Manning that I found entertaining and enjoyable, I found this book to be utterly lacking in any of the well crafted stories that series had.
This book used a collection of fantasy tropes (the lost but talented mage, the dedicated and deadly young night, the pompous noble clashing with the humble and wise noble, the beautiful village girl to name a few) to tell a story that jumped from one event to the next without much in the way of any actual reason or impetus for the characters to do any of the things they did.
In this world magic is apparently so simple that a 16 year old boy can figure it out in one night by reading one book. For me this is a deal breaker as a fantasy lover for many years I appreciate a system of magic that has some level of complexity.
So for me it’s a big fat don’t bother with this book.
