كان الملك الأفضل أكبرهم وقد خلف أباه كثاني أميرٍ على دمشق، كان اسمه الحسن علي ولقب بالملك الأفضل نور الدين لما اجتمع فيه من فضائل.

كان الملك الأفضل أكبر أولاد أبيه وإليه كانت ولاية عهده، فلما توفى والده بدمشق وكان هو في صحبته، استقل بمملكة دمشق، واستقل أخوه الملك العزيز عماد الدين عثمان بالديار المصرية، وبقي الملك الظاهر أخوهما بحلب، ثم إن الملك الأفضل جرت له مع أخيه وقائع يشرحها الكتاب بالتفصيل وآخر الأمر أن العزيز والملك العادل عمه حاصرا دمشق، وأخذاها من الأفضل وأعطاها صَرخد، فمضى إليها وأقام بها قليلاً، فمات العزيز بمصر وتولى ولده الملك المنصور محمد وكان صغيرًا، فطُلِبَ الملك الأفضل منه طلبًا غيّر مجرى الأمور..
