Publisher's Summary

THE ALL-TIME NUMBER ONE AUSTRALIAN BEST SELLER

This is the only money guide you'll ever need.

That's a bold claim, given there are thousands of finance books on the shelves.

Yet there’s a reason this book is in one in every 20 Australian homes.

You’ll find out how to create an entire financial plan that is so simple you can sketch it on the back of a serviette...and you'll be able to manage your money in 10 minutes a week.

The Barefoot Steps stand the test of time. In this classic edition, you’ll get the skinny on:

  • Saving up a six-figure house deposit in 20 months
  • Doubling your income using the 'Trapeze Strategy'
  • Saving $77,641 on your mortgage and wiping out almost seven years of payments
  • Handing your kids (or grandkids) a $140,000 cheque on their 21st birthday
  • Why you don't need $1 million to retire...with the 'Donald Bradman Retirement Strategy'

Sound too good to be true? It's not.

This book is full of stories from everyday Aussies — single people, young families, empty nesters, retirees — who have applied the Barefoot Steps, freed themselves from crippling debt and achieved amazing, life-changing results.

And you're next.

Scott Pape is the Barefoot Investor.

Since 2002, he’s reached millions of Australians through his email newsletter, national weekend newspaper columns, appearances on TV and radio and his bestselling books, The Barefoot Investor (2016) and The Barefoot Investor for Families (2018).

He has worked with the heads of government, schools across the country, AFL and NRL teams, bushfire survivors, and some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

In 2020, Scott was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for ‘service to the community and to financial education’.

Scott gave up his financial services license in 2020 to become a volunteer financial counsellor.

He lives in country Victoria with his wife, Liz, and their four children on their family

farm and is often seen belting around in an old ute that doesn’t need to be locked.

Editorial reviews

Whether you’re looking to save up enough money to put down a deposit on a house or find a financial adviser who’s actually trustworthy, it’s safe to say that achieving financial objectives can feel like an insurmountable challenge. But with the guidance of Scott Pape, The Barefoot Investor himself, your most ambitious money goals can become a reality.

This guide isn’t filled with unachievable budget demands or plans that are impossible to actually put into action. Rather, Pape distils his most pragmatic money advice into five easy-to-follow steps. Aussies can rest assured that they have the most up-to-date information on who to call, where to invest and what to say to achieve financial freedom once and for all. As he’s known for his work on radio and television, it’s no surprise that Pape is a masterful storyteller and narrator — his rich, warm voice brings to life stories from real life Australians, demonstrating the changes in money habits needed to grow and sustain wealth.

Perfect for Australians, not so much for others

The content in the book is as good advice as you will get from anywhere, if you follow what Scott says and have faith you will dig yourself out of whatever hole you are in.

Clear steps on what to do, when to do it and how to do it... No BS, there is very real and legit guidelines in this book that will work. Scott knows what he is talking about.

Perfect for an Australian or if you live in Australia.

That said, I am not Australian nor do I live in Australia! However, with a bit of work I can adapt his ideas to myself here in New Zealand (the actual best country in the world!) but it will just take a bit more work for me to figure out how things work here.

The steps are much the same though.

This book is worth the time you spend with it... Especially if you live in Australia, the 2nd best country in the world, maybe the 3rd. Definitely no lower than 5th!

A great introduction to personal finances

If the concept of dealing with money scares you, and you just want someone to tell you what to do to fix your problems, this is a good book for you. It avoids being overly complicated to the point that it's borderline patronizing. It gives you a very clear, direct way to manage your funds no matter what point you're at in life.

A problem I had was the lack of options. This lack of flexibility leaves a lot of questions to Scott's advice if you're in a unique situation. You'll also ned to learn how to llook past his frequent jokes involving race/gender/sexuality, and his cringy australian references.

If you're just looking for somewhere to start, pick up this book. It'll give you an idea of what you need to know.

Best Audiobook I've Ever Heard

Thank you so much. We have saved thousands already in just a few days. It's a bit of a pain doing all of the steps but very worth it. Lots of the advice is common sense but the difference in this book is the amount of specific information. Thank you.

Best Self Help Book Ever!

Such an easy plan to follow to gain financial security. For a 57 year old separated male, Scott's plan put my mind to rest that I could nail my finances during the final years of my working career and retire comfortably.

I recommend this book to all, especially my children, in the hope they can avoid making the same mistakes I made.

Finally: a manual on How To Adult

There are no gimmicks, sales pitches, commissions, or sneaky anything’s in this book - which is important for someone like me for whom numbers overwhelm and push to make irrational decisions. I’ve been barely keeping my head above water with finances forever without knowing why, and this book is the first thing that’s helped me feel like I’ve come up for air. I’ve got a manual on exactly what steps to take, when/how/why. Thank you, Scott Pape. You and your book are a true national treasure.
