About this listen

When Ruth Morris is moved into Banksia House by her workaholic son Michael, she is eighty-one years young, mourning her loss of independence, and missing her best friend Gladys terribly.

So when she learns Gladys is dying a state over in Brisbane, Ruth is determined to say goodbye. Enlisting the help of her fellow residents, Ruth makes a daring departure from Banksia House alongside renowned escape-artist Keith, and her formidable new friend Beryl.

The journey from Sydney is far from straightforward, featuring grimy hostels, hitchhiking, and a mild case of grand theft. This unlikely trio finds themselves on the trip of a lifetime, where new connections blossom amidst the chaos. But the clock is ticking and Gladys awaits - will they make it across the border in time?

In this joyous and captivating listen, debut author James Roxburgh delivers a heartwarming tale that will have you cheering for Ruth from beginning to end.

This story would make a great movie

In the right hands this story would make a great movie...sadly the themes covered are all too real and familiar. Thanks to the author for casting light on them

Delightful (mis)adventures of 3 seniors

The Banksia House Breakout is an incredibly wholesome and sweet read that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was a delightful journey following the (mis)adventures of these three senior citizens just trying to get to Brisbane, each with colourful backstories that added depth and charm to the story. The camaraderie and zest for life displayed by the characters made it a heartwarming and entertaining read from start to finish. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a feel-good and engaging tale.

Thoroughly enjoyable

A lovely first book from the author. Made me smile and tear up. Also reminded me of my mother and aunties, all now gone and missed. I listen to many books as I walk my dog and this was one of my favourites.

Enjoyed it with my elderly Mum

Mother and I listened to this over a weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Made us want to break a few oldies out from some nursing homes for some jolly adventures too 😏

Absolutely loved it

Great story, loveable characters and an overall feel good read. Would love to see it turned into a movie, even have the actors and actresses picked out in my head! Highly recommend this book.

It’s must read!

I cried… won’t give away why! But a must read, to give insight to what it’s like to grow old and appreciate life, and appreciate your parents and the elderly!!! I lost my dad to cancer and wasn’t by his side. This is a must read!
