About this listen
Ruethwyn's life was promising. Talented in magic, the young elven woman didn't fit in in her hometown but was scheduled to attend the most renowned academy of magic in the kingdom and was even building up the courage to confess her love in the hope it might be returned.
That all ended in a dragon's fire. Resvarygrath the Gilded, lord of the Golden Dominion, destroyed Ruethwyn's village, killed her parents and teacher, and stole away the young women of the village. Maimed by the dragon's flames, Ruethwyn was spared by a curious dark elf who gave her a chance; she had two years to rescue her beloved or risk losing her forever.
Now, Ruethwyn has little time to recover as best she can. Missing an eye and an arm, her magic half-crippled and her wounds impossible to heal due to a curse, Ruethwyn's prospects at the academy are limited, but she refuses to give up. No matter what challenges she may face, she is determined not to surrender. She's lost too much and refuses to lose another.
First, though, she needs to survive long enough, which proves more challenging than Ruethwyn expects.

Fun Listen, Cast Needs Improvement.
The author finally replaced the old narrator with one capable of doing male voices well. Which is VERY nice. The writing is also a large improvement over his previous books, albeit character communication and motivations can feel artificial and stiff at times.
To expand and to be overly critical. I really do enjoy this author's works. However, I find they've one major thing they need to improve upon. Unique and fleshed out characters. I own the majority of Ben's works and find the quality starts to drop as he increases the size of the cast. Whilst a common problem in writing, this has resulted in me dropping sequels in both This and the Ancient Dreams series. I hope the author can work on building a story with a much smaller but fleshed out and unique cast in the future; or at the very least make the main cast more interesting. This however is dependent on both Ben and his narrator, in addition to it being a lot of work. So I'm hopeful Ben will continue to improve his writing as he goes.
Overall, an enjoyable listen. If you're interested in this kind of story, I encourage you to give it a go.
Whilst I don't know yet if I'll continue past beyond this book, I'm certainly looking forward to getting my hands on Ben's next series of books.
