About this listen

In July 2004, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. Now, in The Audacity of Hope, Senator Obama calls for a different brand of politics: a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the "endless clash of armies" we see in Congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of "our improbable experiment in democracy". He also speaks, with surprising intimacy and self-deprecating humor, about settling in as a senator, seeking to balance the demands of public service and family life, and his own deepening religious commitment.

At the heart of this audiobook is Senator Obama's vision of how we can move beyond our divisions to tackle concrete problems. Underlying his stories about family, friends, members of the Senate, and even the president is a vigorous search for connection: the foundation for a radically hopeful political consensus.

A senator and a lawyer, a professor and a father, a Christian and a skeptic, and above all a student of history and human nature, Senator Obama has written a book of transforming power.

It is mostly about his policies and the why behind them. I nearly gave up towards the beginning but persevered, and I am glad that I did. I learned to see lots of things from both sides, a valuable lesson.

Interesting

What made the experience of listening to The Audacity of Hope the most enjoyable?
Six hours of Barack Obama's voice! Hello! Honestly that man could read a microwave manual have me weeping with emotion by the end.

Any additional comments?
This made me respect the 44th president of the United States even more than it did before. He touches on subjects that are as relevant as they've ever been like;- Democrats and Republican politicians choosing polarizing opinions on social issues to get cut through rather than giving coherent intelligent dialogue about bigger issues and action plans- Talks about the importance of the press in keeping politicians honest- About religion and politics, and inclusion - And most touchingly, he talks about how he got to where he is, the strength he finds in his wife and the love he has for his family. They'll never make another one like him. If you haven't listened or read this yet, this book doesn't disappoint.

Just to let you know, I work for Audible, but the views expressed in this review are 100% my own.

More important now than it's ever been..

The spirit of hope in recognising and addressing the increasing economic gap between middle class Americans and the less fortunate citizens of the US, is the driving force throughout this engaging story of Obama’s rise to the US Senate. A fascinating, fast moving tale set to the beat of an Afro-American faced with a difficult mission, to make a difference in changing the laws impacting the quality of everyday life for every US blue collar worker.

Hope springs eternal

A very clear and inspiring look at solving problems from another perspective. There's quite a few ironies in it seeing he wrote it before he was president and before the right wing Trump movement that followed him.

Awesome. A good read for a capitalist conservative
