Just what I needed

Daniel Parsons's book 'The #ArtOfTwitter' is aimed at people who are fundamentally creatives, and who need to have a Twitter presence as part of their 'platform'. He starts with an explanation of key terms that I've heard for years and only vaguely understood. He then goes through how to set up a profile that really works for a creative type, including all the small stuff that can consume ridiculous amounts of time to get right if you don't know, like the dimensions of images to use. He gives well thought out advice on how to create a presence that will appeal to the relevant audience.

The book covers all the obvious key areas, like tweeting and retweeting, adding media of different types, following and being followed, but with a strong strategic rationale for everything he suggests. He goes through a number of ways of building follower numbers, and brings out some less known bits of Twitterology, like why I might hit a ceiling of follows (5,000 - I wish!) where I can't add anyone new and what to do about that.

He suggests that all my tweets should provide either entertainment, inspiration or knowledge. That seems like a good set of guidelines. Thanks! No more photos of my lunch. I never was quite sure why I was doing that anyway.

I did a short course on using social media a few years ago with a fairly well-known personality, and it was just plain irritating. This book is a whole different thing. It's concrete, considered and intelligent. I've now set myself up a new profile for my writing, and am getting all kinds of useful stuff coming through my feed so that I really want to go and check out what's there.

If you're at the point in your creative career where you are thinking about using Twitter to help develop your social media presence, or are perhaps already using it but not getting the results you are after, I recommend that you give this book a good read. I got both the Kindle and the Audible versions of it. I've listened to it twice through already (the narration by J D Kelly is excellent), and am using the Kindle version to go back and check details. Definitely worth the money.
