About this listen
Critic Reviews
"Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.'s, voice is soft and evocative of the traveler who is enchanted with all that he sees and experiences, lending credence to the work. From planning the trip, to going there (whether in your armchair or for real), Zimbalist's delivery will inspire you to think and experience the world around you more fully." ( AudioFile)

50% wisdom and 50% sentimentality
This is basically a broad anthology of various individuals' ideas and feelings about travel as "pilgrimage", with the author's own insights thrown in for good measure. In any such collection of random ponderings, there are bound to be some true and helpful insights.
But in general, I found a great deal of it to be utter sentimentality. Being a pilgrim is nine tenths sweat and toil and meeting the practical demands of the journey. But this book focuses on the poetic and aesthetic aspects. The author talks a lot about the importance of "spirituality", but shies away from anything too religious (especially if it is orthodox Christianity!).
In terms of the audio production, the reader reads well and expressively, but it is very often unclear whether you are hearing the voice of the author or of one of the many people he is quoting.
