About this listen

If you're like many people, you might associate debate with a high school or college club, or perhaps a TV political debate that features two or more candidates talking over each other. But if these are your only associations with debating, you're missing out on an exhilarating intellectual pursuit that can help you in all aspects of your daily life. The ability to debate - to present persuasive arguments, pierce the logic of others, and turn the tables against withering cross-examinations - is one of the truest tests of one's intellectual capacity.

The Art of Debate offers you the ultimate how-to guide for anyone interested in learning this powerful skill. Taught by acclaimed Professor Jarrod Atchison of Wake Forest University, these 24 stimulating lectures will help you develop your command of logic, construct clear and concise arguments, recognize the fallacies in others' reasoning, and sharpen your strategic thinking skills. Through a series of well-structured lectures that proceed logically through each formal element of a debate, Professor Atchison shows you how to build and defend an argument, sharpening your critical thinking skills so that you come away from the course well prepared for any kind of debate.

While Professor Atchison provides you an abundance of insight into the formal elements of debate, the focus of this course is on applied debating - developing skills that you can apply to the real world to help you think through complex issues and arrive at better decisions. Imagine you are a manager faced with a difficult dilemma: should you repair some of your manufacturing equipment, or invest in new equipment? What do you do?

Whether you are trying to make a tough business decision or lead a lively discussion at the dinner table, this course will elevate your strategic thinking, providing insight not only into how to win arguments, but how to present ideas more generally.

Loved it and I highly recommend

How many times have you been steamrolled in a discussion seemingly unable to effectively articulate your point or point out the flaws in the oppositions, only to reflect for days afterward until you inconveniently (but predictably) think of the perfect rebuttal long after the moment has passed? It can be a frustrating experience. We've all been there.

What if I told you that one the best parts about this lecture series, is the exploration of how to swiftly handle and / or diffuse an opposing argument? Especially those based on flawed logic and / or biased thinking - with proven methodolgies to 'sort the wheat from the chaff' and hold them to account.

This lecture series provides a genuine treasure trove of argumentation theory and strategies to best present your facts / case, and HOW to apply them.

If you've been looking for the ultimate framework and resource to help you harness and refine your ability to effectively articulate, buttress defend and assert your case, whilst simultaneously being able to confidently dissect, evaluate, disarm your opposition's argument in the moment when it really counts, then do yourself a favour and study this course closely like I and so many others have already.

But I must warn you, this material is powerful so be sure to apply it with thoughtful discretion and respect for your opposition. Because, no one likes to be strong-armed, embarrassed or humiliated.

Apply this material wisely and you'll be in great stead in your work, debates and socially. Imagine the confidence.

Because, after you've mastered this material, the only problem you're going to have is that you didn't do it sooner.

Overly political

He kept throwing in unnecessary politics to bolster his argument. Problem is, a lot of the political facts he claimed have been disproven. I’m sick of listening to these Great Courses books, too many of the professors are leftists who deliberately try to indoctrinate their audiences. Don’t believe me? Read Brainwashed by Ben Shapiro.
