About this listen
A gripping tale of espionage and murder in Elizabethan London.
London, 1590. Queen Elizabeth I's control over her kingdom is wavering. Amidst a tumultuous backdrop of Spanish plotters, Catholic heretics and foreign wars threatening the country's fragile stability, the body of a small boy is found in the City of London, with strange marks that no one can explain.
When idealistic physician Nicholas Shelby finds another body displaying the same marks only days later, he becomes convinced that a killer is at work, preying on the weak and destitute of London.
Determined to find out who is behind these terrible murders, Nicholas is joined in his investigations by Bianca, a mysterious tavern keeper. As more bodies are discovered, the pair find themselves caught in the middle of a sinister plot. With the killer still at large, and Bianca in terrible danger, Nicholas's choice seems impossible - to save Bianca, or save himself....

Absolutely Riveting
I found this book very hard to put down. The answer to the mystery was well hidden to the end. Historical accuracy was well adhered to. I hope this author has many other historical thrillers I can feast on.

Terror and Treachery
I was a little sceptical. I like modern crime but this was set centuries ago. I enjoyed the history brought to life and the insight into what life was like. So interesting to realise what little knowledge physicians had as to how the body actually works.

An all encompassing review of the whole series
The series is set in Elizabethan England and later in the series, the continent.
I was hesitant at first, about going back in history, but S W Perry’s writing is eloquent and his stories are engaging and suspenseful.
I recommend the purchase of all four books for their historical accuracy, believable characters and their mystery.

Not my usual style of book
I really enjoyed this. I’m usually a horror and fantasy fan but for some reason this really had me hooked.

Did not draw me in
I found this story to be very slow. I held on until chapter 15, hoping to become a little more invested in Nicholas Shelby's life but couldn't marshall enough interest to want to get through the next 37 chapters, and so have given up and will return it. The plot and historical detail are interesting enough, and the narration is excellent, but not enough to hold me through the slow pace. I have enjoyed other historical fiction in the same style- namely, the Gil Cunningham series by Pat McIntosh. Unfortunately, I struggled with 'The Angel's Mark'.
