Publisher's Summary

The powerful new novel from master storyteller Jackie French

The soldiers called her the Angel of Waterloo...Henrietta Bartlett, the esteemed surgeon's daughter who was born on a battlefield, lost her mother on a battlefield, and was widowed on the battlefield, where she worked alongside her father on that fateful day in June 1815.

But after the carnage of war, Hen dreams of peace, and her own home, and a society that would allow a woman to practice medicine.

The new and faraway colony of New South Wales seems a paradise, where even convicts have a chance of a good life, and the Indigenous women are eager to teach Hen their vast knowledge of medical lore. But as the fallout of Europe's wars casts its dark shadows in the colony, Hen must work hard to find her place in this new country ...

Among the best of books

This was a truly wonderful book. I feel like I have been looking to read a book that weaves a story around Australian colonisation for a long time. It captures the beauty and harshness of the landscape, the horror of the times, and the wonder of it too. I was engrossed from start to finish.

Can’t stop listening

This my first book by Jackie French. Just simply can’t stop listening. A bit naive story at the beginning, but it becomes quite exciting as the story progresses. You can literally feel the atmosphere of Colonial Australia. Lovely narrator as well.

What a cracking story.

I did not expect to be so completely captivated by the characters, the plot and the details of life in colonial Australia. So grateful for the author’s acknowledgments and explanation at the conclusion of this audio book. I think I am ok with how the story ended….

Hidden Depth

At first I thought this was going to be a very predictable romance that skimmed the surface of an interesting story, but I just loved the way that the story matured just as the main character did.
And the narrator deserves 6 stars for her ability to adopt such a range of (sometimes very unfamiliar) accents without making any of them detract from the story.
Loved this!

A thoroughly charming book

I enjoyed The Angel of Waterloo, although less to do with Waterloo than he journey to Australia and her immersion into her new life in a new country. Her experiences at Waterloo shaped her although did not dictate her future. She carved out her own existence in a foreign land and thrived despite hardships. I great read overall.
