About this listen

Discover the Christian roots of the values we prize in Western society.

Is Christianity history? Or is Christian history the deepest explanation of the modern world?

Today in the West, many consider the church to be dead or dying. Christianity is seen as outdated, bigoted, and responsible for many of society’s problems. This leaves many believers embarrassed about their faith and many outsiders wary of religion. But what if the Christian message is not the enemy of our modern Western values, but the very thing that makes sense of them?

In this fascinating book, Glen Scrivener takes listeners on a journey to discover how the teachings of Jesus not only turned the ancient world upside down, but continue to underpin the way we think of life, worth, and meaning. Far from being a relic from the past, the distinctive ideas of Christianity, such as freedom, kindness, progress, and equality, are a crucial part of the air that we breathe. As author Glen Scrivener says in his introduction: “The extraordinary impact of Christianity is seen in the fact that we don’t notice it.”

This is a book for both believers and sceptics—giving Christians confidence to be open about their faith and showing sceptics the ways in which the message of Jesus makes sense of their most cherished beliefs. Whoever you are, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the values you hold dear as you discover the power and profundity of Jesus and his revolution.

Excellent book, great narration quality

This book was engaging, funny and a distinctly hopeful book. I loved the generous and bible attitude and sharp engagement of the bible, Christian theology and the world we live. Already got a list of friends to share it with, both believing and not.

masterfully written and presented.

an honest and compelling presentation of the failings of the Christian church and the world in general, as well as the truth of Christ Himself. it is by His standards we see our own failings and have the hope of forgiveness and redemption. this is one book that is most certainly worth reading/listening to again.

Revealing the overlooked obvious.

I love the way Glen relates aspects of our modern lives that we take for granted but are only there because of the Biblical aspects of our Christian heritage. i resalky enjoyed this book and will read it again.

clear and compelling

Scrivener held my interest from the opening lines right to the very last word (no, I hadn't fallen asleep). Clearly and captivatingly read, with a compelling view of history and the philosophy that has shaped our western world through a revolutionary Jesus story. I hope and would love for Scrivener to give us a glimpse of eastern and middle eastern culture and religion and the Christian influence through history.

You are probably more Christian than you think

Glen connects deep historical and philosophical issues to today's world and the pervasive influence of Christianity with warmth, accessibility and persuasion. There's some pretty challenging terrain here, but Glen's broad research and sympathetic approach to his themes makes for compelling listening that will enlighten curious listeners, whether they follow Jesus or not.

Wonderful Window Victim is Victor

I've been won by Jesus for 50 years but this story has opened a window on what God has done in a masterful way. A wonderful window on our western world. Brilliant story and powerful contemporary look at our world.
Glen Scrivener's narration is excellent. Thank you

Enjoyable and thought-provoking

A very accessible book, summarising the impact of Christianity, and how it has shaped our values. Glenn narrates very well; the only slight negative was the lack of a pause at the end of one section and reading the heading for the next - a couple of times I missed the fact the topic had actually changed. Otherwise, this is an excellent book, and I'll be recommending it to others.
