About this listen

Private detective Adrian Elias knows what trouble looks like, and ruthless mobster and lion shifter Sage Tamir was just that, with a capital "T". On top of smelling like heaven, the man has the face of an angel, with a body made for unbridled sin. A combination Adrian finds very hard to resist.

Unfortunately, someone is trying to kill Sage, and they’re using magic to do it. Sage usually takes these types of matters into his own hands, but this time, he’s out of his league. He believes the only person who can help him is the down-on-his-luck detective. Problem is, Adrian doesn't want to take his case because he feels it may be too dangerous. Never mind the volcanic-level attraction they seem to share for each other raising the stakes. Magic and mayhem awaits.

Listener advisory: For ages 18 and older. Strong adult situations and language. A sarcastic PI and a no-nonsense mobster will keep you resisting pause way past your bedtime. Best order that pizza, because once you start this book, you won’t want to stop.

Creative & entertaining with lots of plot twists!

PI Adrian Elias tangles with some shady supernatural characters but he’s fundamentally a good person. That’s not helping his PI business which is limping along until he is hired by Sage Tamir, a king of the lion shifters who runs his pride like a mafioso boss. Adrian and Sage are both mages and when they meet, their destined mate bond leaves them hot and very sweaty. People are trying to kill Sage and a sneak attack leaves him barely alive so Adrian does a deal with one of the vampire lords, which saves Sage but changes him into a vampire in thrall to the vampire lord. Can Adrian and Sage reverse a demon possession, fend off the vampire lord, and work out who is trying to kill Sage and why?

I enjoyed this busy, creative plot a lot. It contains Nicholas Bella’s trademark gore but he’s dialled down the sexual chemistry to a fairly respectable simmer, which leaves room for a lot of action and plot twists and turns. While Adrian is basically good and Sage is morally dubious, Adrian is coopted into Sage’s more sordid acts and Sage is more drawn to helping Adrian do good. In other words, they complement as well as balance each other out and I really liked that greyness in the characters. This is only Part 1 of 3, so although some things resolve, lots of things in the story will be covered in the upcoming books. There’s a big info dump at the start but don’t let that put you off, the action soon starts humming along. 🎧 I was unfamiliar with voice actor Keith Folz but I thought he did a great job. He gives the characters distinctive accent which really helps you distinguish who is speaking and he injects the right amount of emotion into each scene!
