Publisher's Summary
Dr. River McKay moved to Denver with his husband, Terrence, hoping to give their failing marriage a new start. A year later, Terrence is gone, and River’s left brokenhearted. Now, he’s decided it’s time to get back in the game. A chance encounter at the hospital introduces him to Phil, a strong-willed pharmacist who isn’t impressed by River’s degree.
Phil can’t deny his attraction to River, but dating is out of the question. Phil only does one kind of relationship - domestic servitude, where he gives the orders and his partner obeys. To his surprise, River agrees - not because he likes the idea, but because anything’s better than being alone.
They know the arrangement won’t last. Phil’s set in his ways and incapable of showing affection outside the bedroom. River’s unused to obedience and still in love with his ex. But their time together will change them, making them question everything they thought they knew about love, control, and relationships.
When the unexpected threatens to tear them apart, they’ll have to choose between the comforts of the past and a future they can only find together.

Enjoyable but different!
I often enjoy a book which introduces a character to BDSM elements as it can provide details and aspects otherwise overlooked when the characters have an understanding of the dynamics already. This story has some very fascinating quirks I’ve not seen in any other book – the honorific ‘teacher’ for one, the limited emotional attachment when establishing the connection and the specific domestic discipline arrangement is unlike any other I have come across. It’s certainly a slow burn emotionally but the sexual elements are hot right off the bat. A really interesting read and John Solo does a wonderful job with the narration, bringing some subtlety through each of the main and secondary characters that helped add another layer to the story.

Fantastic series, fantastic book!
Hospital pharmacist and one of the Heretic Doms friendship group, Phil is strongly buttoned-down; he doesn’t do emotions and he can only navigate a relationship through rigid control of his partner. ER surgeon Dr River McKay is so lonely, he hopes his cheating husband, Terrence, will leave his new boyfriend and return home. River has never contemplated a dom / sub relationship, but he’s willing to try anything with Phil to counter the loneliness. I find the well-written BDSM romances are character-driven with a strong psychological component and this was no exception. River is such a decent, lovely character and although Phil is remote, he is never cruel, dismissive, nor manipulative, unlike Terrence. I appreciated Phil’s inner quest for change as he slowly learned to trust River. I also loved the repeated metaphor of River being like Phil’s cat whose affection couldn’t be demanded by Phil; like the cat, River had to choose to stay. Some triggers: open relationship sex scenes and some bondage. Champion audio narrator John Solo did his always amazing best.
