Rasmussen er primært kendt for sine børne- og ungdomsbøger. Han fik sin litterære debut i 1966 med bogen "Alt kan gro" og har siden udgivet over 40 bøger. I løbet af sin mangeårige forfatterkarriere har Bent Rasmussen blandt andet vundet Danmarks Skolebibliotekarers Børnebogspris (1978), Gyldendals Boglegat for Børnebogsforfattere og -tegnere (1984), Kulturministeriets Børnebogspris (1988) og BMF‘s Børnebogspris (1994).
