تأخذنا الرواية إلى البحرين ومعالم المنامة قديماً،ثم إلى المحرق وحاراتها،حيث تحمل في ثناياها ألم الفراق والغربة والوداع المؤلم،فالفقر والحاجة والعوز دعت الأبناء للسفر لمنطقة البحرين للعمل كخبازين، الشوق والحنين لأم وأب طال بهم الإنتظار يعيشون على أمل عودة أبناءهم من غربتهم لزوجة قتلها الحنين لزوجها،يأملون من البحر أن يعيد أبناءهم،يسألونه ولكم هل من مجيب.بطل الرواية عبدالله وابناءه(جاسم،وعبدالرحمن،وأحمد)،يضيق بهم الحال فيقرر الأبناء(جاسم وعبد الرحمن) السفر إلى إحدى دول الخليج وهي البحرين لطلب الرزق،بعد ذلك تنقطع أخبارهم فيقلق عبدالله وزوجته فيرسلون ولدهم أحمد لطلب الرزق والبحث عن أخواه،يذهب أحمد مع إبنه محمد على الرغم من إعتراض أمه وزوجة أحمد إلا أن عبدالله يُصر على سفر ابنه وهو حينذاك رجل طاعن في السن،يصل أحمد إلى البحرين تحديداً عند باب البحرين،حيث بساطة الحياة وسهولتها آنذاك،ولكن هل سيعثر أحمد على أخويه؟ وما علاقة التنور به؟.رواية تختلط فيها رائحة الخبز والعجين والتنور،والشوق والحنين لأشخاص باعدت المسافات بينهم ،تعود بك لحقبة زمنية كان الأهل والأحباب يجلسون على شاطيء البحر ينتظرون الرسائل التي تصلهم من أبناءهم وأزواجهم.
