Der Tango entstand in den Armenvierteln von Buenos Aires. Nachdem die Diktatur des Juan Manuel Rosas 1852 geendet hatte, strömten zwischen 1880 und 1930 etwa sechs Millionen Einwanderer nach Argentinien. Sie siedelten sich am Rande von Buenos Aires um den Rio de la Plata in Massenunterkünften, so genannten "Conventillos" an. Hier entstand ein buntes Gemisch aus Europäern, Arabern und Kreolen. All diesen Menschen wurde das verweigert, weswegen sie eigentlich gekommen waren:

Die Teilhabe am wachsenden Wohlstand. Weder Teilen noch Haben verwirklichten sich für sie. Das brachte eine explosive Mischung aus enttäuschten Europäern und entwurzelten Gauchos hervor. Die so entstandene Identität kompensierte ihr Heimweh, ihre Frustration, ihre Entwurzelung in drei Disziplinen: Wort, Musik und Tanz. Es entstand der Tango...
