Disappointed

I had read so many rave reviews about how this was the perfect comfort read, the cosiest fantasy romance you could get your hands on, and I was excited for that, because it's just not done enough! The premise sounded wonderful and I had high expectations, but boy could I just not get behind how insufferably silly Halla is. I love Zale, Sarkis, Brindle. Even the deliberately unlike able characters were written well enough, but Halla is just so... Dense. I was grinding my teeth through half the novel. There is an attempt to reveal her mindless, meandering questions and distractedness are an intentional act and she's actually clever underneath but the reader is far too privy to her thought process with her being the MC to fall for that for long. She's sweet, kind, generous, yes all those things. I love that she's older, she's bigger, she's a widow. What a refreshing protagonist! But lord I just don't like her at all. Her self deprecating thoughts are hard to not agree with long enough to pity her. I really enjoyed everything else, but her. And well... She's a big part of this so that's hard to look past.

While I'd love to know what happens next with Sarkis and his story with the cliffhanger ending in the sequels, I just can't read them because Halla is just not worth enduring for answers.

Nicely written and narrated

I found the writing quite witty and the narration so very well captures the thoughts of the very likeable characters. I've marked down some books before that had excessive internal deliberations by the characters, but I never felt that it had overstayed its welcome for this book. Maybe it's the likeability of the characters, or maybe the deliberations were not empty or inconsequential to the overall story, and/or how well the narrator performed, but I very much enjoyed listening to this book and chuckling at the cheeky dialogue.

Laugh out loud funny

Spent the weekend guffawing and snorting to myself. Love T Fingfisher's brand of quirky humour, adored Halla and wish I had a Serkis of my own.

First time listening to Jesse's narration. Not only did she fail to make my ears bleed with a whiny voice or annoying accent, but I thought her ability to differentiate between characters was excellent. She's very good at querulous screeching when required as well 😄

A light hearted romp

A light hearted adventure with a fun set of characters. I adored Sarkis and his accent really made the character. Halla is a wee bit irritating, but I forgive her for it.
A good read if you don’t want to take anything too seriously. V. little spice

Light but fun read

I loved this! Found family, slow-paced but fun adventure, interesting characters.
The narration is also lovely. Very easy to listen to!

Narration is pretty good

I was enjoying the first third of the book but the characters started to get a bit annoying, the romance was a bit dull and there was no interesting intimacy. The fantasy elements weren't great either. I would've been happy with the travelling plot if the relationship/dialogue continued to interest me.

Love the sarcastic humour

At first I wasn’t taken by this story. I was about to boot it from my reads, then it just struck my funny bone and I loved every second. I really enjoyed that the characters are adults and not teens and became invested in each role. Narrator was great too, she hit the nail on the head for me.

Funny, unusual adventure fantasy romance.

Very likeable and well-drawn characters. Exciting adventure set in the world of the White Rat. One of T. Kingfisher's better romance.
The narrator exaggerated the shouting parts of the dialogues, but other than wasn't too bad and suited the female MC.

DNF 6 chapters in

If you want to be frustrated by a weak, indecisive FMC, with a never ending inner dialogue.... read this book. I just couldn't
