About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

'People talk about football managers being under pressure. Trust me, that's nothing. Pressure is watching one of your drivers hit a barrier at 190mph and exploding before your eyes...'

Guenther Steiner is one of motor racing's biggest and most celebrated characters, known to millions for his show-stealing appearances on Netflix's hugely popular fly on the wall series, Drive to Survive.

In Surviving to Drive, the Haas team principal takes readers inside his Formula 1 team for the entirety of the 2022 season, giving an unobstructed view of what really takes place behind the scenes. Through this unique lens, Guenther takes us on the thrilling rollercoaster of life at the heart of high stakes motor racing.

Packed full of twists and turns, from hiring and firing drivers, balancing books, pre-season preparations, the design, launch and testing of a car - and of course, the race calendar itself - this is the first time that an F1 team has allowed an acting team principal to tell the full story of a whole season.

Uncompromising and searingly honest, told in Steiner's inimitable style, this is a fascinating and hugely entertaining account of the realities of running a Formula 1 team.

Critic Reviews

Fearless and candid, Surviving to Drive reads like the night-time confessions of a football manager who is fighting to stay in the Premier League. A gleeful guide to a bonkers sport from a loveable rogue insider. (Melanie Reid)
It's gripping to read. It's funny, it's real, it's exciting. It's a brilliant book. (Chris Evans)
Very colourful. Like having a conversation with Steiner. (Radio 4, Today)

If you’re an old school F1 listen. If you’re a new enthusiast listen.

A great description of the last couple of years of F1 by an incredibly experienced Team Principal.
It would have been easy to rest on his reputation and all the memes.
So much better as spoken by Gunther, highly appreciate his honesty, an excellent listen.

Insightful and f**king interesting

Loved this book - an excellent review of the season. I’d love to hear more from Gunter - even though the author and narrator is f**king wa*ker 😊😊.
Shame there isn’t an audio book narrated by Nikki Lauda

Gunther is the star

Great to listen to Gunther put his season done on his own words. Would love to hear the next version post Haas.

A great listen

What a character!! This is a great listen to one of the great characters in F1 and the Haas teams struggles across 2022 through the Russian invasion issues, driver challenges, managing a tight multi million dollar budget, rule changes, unforecast stardom and a new wave of unpredicted fans. Fabulous 'tell it the way it is' style from someone who is authentic in a world of political correctness and spin.
Worth a listen.

Lazy, Repeatable, Just a Diary

He is hard to love, hard to hate, but speaking in the third person to the degree he does is alarming and annoying. SAY MY NAME 1000 times...Anyway, filled with funny anecdotes, but mostly just a lazy diary, admittedly sent to publishers to be fixed and presented. It is not a book, more of a podcast with all entries put together. Lazy effort Fokking Wanchor, ha, but still worth a listen.

Guenther Fest!

Very funny and insightful. A little more on the driver's market would have been even better.

An amazing book written by a mad Italian!

This book was amazing and shows all of the ups and downs of an F1 season. Guenther is not shy about saying what he wants and even made me laugh a lot while reading! If you want to also grab the audible audiobook then you’ll have the pleasure to hear Guenther Steiner read to you in a way only he can! Highly recommend

Respect to Team Haas & Gunther

As a long time F1 fan having the insight that Guenther has shared with us in such a manner is so refreshing! Really enjoyed every moment from Guenther’s perspective, never really realised how much goes into a team like Haas! As I mentioned in my heading I have so much more respect for the team and a team boss, decisions that need to be made in seconds on the track and the big decisions that need to be made at boardroom level @F1 level just incredible! Congratulations Guenther great listen along with your Humour just made it! Thank you for sharing!

Please, make another one!

This book presents the undiluted emotions, fine details, and a unique perspective on what “living the game” is like. It perfectly articulates the meaning of struggles of life. The frankness and honesty in this book made the stories relatable to mere mortals.
