About this listen

After enduring the horror and chaos of postwar Germany, Lotte Drescher and her family arrive in Australia full of hope for a new life. It’s a land of opportunity, where Lotte and husband Erich hope to give their children the future they have always dreamed of. After years of struggling to find their feet as ‘New Australians’, Erich turns his skill as a wood carver into a successful business and Lotte makes a career out of her lifelong passion, photography. The sacrifices they have made finally seem worth it until Erich’s role in the trade union movement threatens to have him branded a communist and endanger their family. As the shadow of the Vietnam War looms, the unexpected arrival of her former fiancé Heinrich forces Lotte to a turning point. Her decision will change her life forever – and to finally understand the true meaning of home.©2018 Tania Blanchard (P)2018 Bolinda Publishing Family Life Fiction Historical Fiction

Brilliant Story

What a brilliant story enlightening me on immigrants lives on arrival to Australia. Learning of their thoughts as Australia's history evolved was really thought provocating. The depth of Lotta's relationship was beautiful.

Great to have the opportunity to continue to follow the lives of the characters I loved from the girl from Munich.

I hate to admit that for some reason I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first book because I really did enjoy the storyline, Australian history and the fantastic characters. I’m not sure if it was because I read the first book but listened to this one but this book felt a bit saccharine in parts and there were times I found the narrator difficult to listen to. She didn’t seem the right voice for these characters. I’d have loved to hear voices with more realistic accents. Even with all of this however my investment in the characters kept me listening and enjoying the book until the end.

Loved book 1 - 'The Girl From Berlin' too

Couldn't stop listening. Purchased this book as soon as I had finished The Girl from Berlin.

Loved it!

Everything from the narrator to the story was fantastic.
I first read Letters from Berlin and fell in love with the story. This is the next book in the story of Lotta.
I particularly loved hearing about how the non Jewish Germans themselves were fooled by Hitler and how they themselves also had to escape their country.
This was a great listen and I’m looking forward to listening to The Girl From Munich

Well told fact based story

I enjoyed this very much. It is the story of my lifetime told through different eyes. A well constructed fact based fiction. Even the author’s notes are entertaining.

Suitcase full of dreams

A wonderful story based on a true tale of a family Immigrating to Australia in the 1950s. It gives an incite into the trials and tribulations faced trying to make a new life in a new country. Really enjoyed it.

slow but enjoyable

I enjoyed both The Girl from Munich and Suitcase of Dreams. though I did find them slow and somewhat difficult to get into, but I'm amazed how real struggles help grow the love of the character, the determination they all share and the fact it's based on real life and I love learning about what happened during these times in Germany and Australia.

I'm now looking forward to starting Letters from Berlin

Great sequel!

I loved the first book (which I got as a freebie and not a usual book I would have selected) and this sequel was just as good!! The reader has a wonderful voice, passionate & transitions well between characters. A fabulous story of the journey of a new migrant life in Australia. Thank you to the author for sharing her family’s story x
