About this listen
Detective Everett Larkin of New York City’s Cold Case Squad has been on medical leave since catching the serial killer responsible for what the media has dubbed the “Death Mask Murders.” But Larkin hasn’t forgotten that another memento—another death—is waiting to be found.
Summer brings the grisly discovery of human remains in the subway system, but the clues point to one of Larkin’s already-open cases, so he resumes active duty. And when a postmortem photograph, akin to those taken during the Victorian Era, is located at the scene, Larkin requests aid from the most qualified man he knows: Detective Ira Doyle of the Forensic Artists Unit.
An unsolved case that suffered from tunnel vision, as well as the deconstruction of death portraits, leads Larkin and Doyle down a rabbit hole more complex than the tunnels beneath Manhattan. And if this investigation isn’t enough, both are struggling with how to address the growing intimacy between them. Because sometimes, love is more grave than murder.

Am liking this series 5*****
The second book in the series is just as entertaining as the first. The mystery and suspense keep the listener engaged throughout, while the developing relationship between the two main characters is kind, sweet and supportive. The back story for both main characters is still unknown but as snippets are revealed it keeps you wanting more. Great narration. Have already downloaded the next in the series :)

Carefully weaved plot
I'm enjoying watching the relationship between Doyle and Larkin develop. This is definitely a slow burn romance which takes a back-seat to the crime story.
I have found I need to listen to these stories on a slower speed to absorb all the characters and keep up with the investigation. For some these books may be easier to digest in hard copy.
Looking forward to the next installment being loaded to audible.

Another exciting Larkin & Doyle case!
Despite being a member of the NYPD Cold Case Squad, Det Everett Larkin is asked to investigate a grisly slaying in the subway when a message from the purported killer addressed to Larkin is found at the scene. Of course, Larkin requests the services of forensic artist Det Ira Doyle and the two manage to save a young teen being held by one of the killer’s associates who supplies people with death portraits with victim specifications made to order. Can they track down the person pulling the strings? Meanwhile, Larkin has moved in with Doyle after the implosion of Larkin’s marriage but Larkin is still popping Xanax like Tic Tacs.
Another exciting case as Larkin and Doyle navigate their nascent relationship / friendship. While both men have experienced tragedy, Larkin is still learning to trust Doyle and is concealing the extent of his drug dependency. I really appreciated the personal stories of the two men but I was pleased it didn’t swamp the investigation—this was well-balanced! I’m also enjoying the NYC setting which features throughout. 🎧 Voice actor Kale Williams does another excellent job on the audiobook!
