Der Historiker und Geograph Johann Jacob Grümbke (1771-1849) erforschte die Geschichte und Landeskunde Rügens. Seine erste bedeutende Veröffentlichung, "Streifzüge durch das Rügenland", erschien 1805 unter dem Pseudonym Indigena, "der Einheimische".
Grümbke beschreibt in der für seine Zeit üblichen Briefform seine Wanderungen über die Insel Rügen. 12 Briefe umfasst das Werk - am 26. Juli 1803 in Stralsund beginnend und am 7. Oktober 1803 in Greifswald endend. Dazwischen liegen detaillierte Beschreibungen von Bergen, der Insel Hiddensee, dem Kap Arkona, Altenkirchen, Saßnitz, der Stubbenkammer, dem Jagdhaus Granitz, Sellin, Göhren, Putbus und der Insel Vilm.
