Middle-aged, jaded and divorced, TV scriptwriter Harada returns one night to the dilapidated downtown district of Tokyo where he grew up. There, at the theatre, he meets a likable man who looks exactly like his long-dead father. And so begins Harada's ordeal, as he's thrust into a reality where his parents appear to be alive at the exact age they had been when they had died so many years before.

Grief and loneliness

This story was adapted to a western setting with western characters for the film it was turned into. The film was awe inspiring and attuned to the despondent disposition of a man grieving his parents and the loneliness that lingered within him. The main character was also tweaked to be homosexual and fell for another man in his building. The film was expertly reflective of the psychology of a man who is coming to terms with his sexuality, loneliness and grief that I found I had to learn more about this story and listen to the original text.
It was wonderful to have the story adapted to a Japanese setting with cultural authenticities. There was a traditional hungry ghost theme that was explored more in the original book than the film. I definitely recommend this audible recording for those who loved the film and yearn to learn more about the characters in their original forms.
