About this listen
In Strange Fire, best-selling author and pastor John MacArthur chronicles the unsavory history behind the modern Charismatic movement.
What would God say about those who blatantly misrepresent His Holy Spirit; who exchange true worship for chaotic fits of mindless ecstasy; who replace the biblical gospel with vain illusions of health and wealth; who claim to prophesy in His name yet speak errors; and who sell false hope to desperate people for millions of dollars? The Charismatic movement has always been a breeding-ground for scandal, greed, bad doctrine, and all kinds of spiritual chicanery. As a movement, it is clearly headed the wrong direction. And it is growing at an unprecedented rate.
From the Word of Faith to the New Apostolic Reformation, the Charismatic movement is being consumed by the empty promises of the prosperity gospel. Too many Charismatic celebrities promote a “Christianity” without Christ, a Holy Spirit without holiness. And their teaching is having a disastrous influence on a grand scale, as large television networks broadcast their heresies to every part of the world.
In Strange Fire, best-selling author and pastor John MacArthur chronicles the unsavory history behind the modern Charismatic movement. He lays out a chilling case for rejecting its false prophets, speaking out against their errors, showing true reverence to the Holy Spirit, and above all clinging to the Bible as the inerrant, authoritative Word of God and the one true standard by which all truth claims must be tested.

Lots of generalisations ...
Lots of generalisations that label Pentecostals and Charismatics as false prophet deceived crazies going to hell. If you haven’t had anything to do with Pentecostals and Charismatics that’s probably what you’ll come out thinking. As someone who came to Christ through an evangelical church I used to believe in the cessation of the gifts and also believed that Pentecostals were going to hell. Not any more since going to a Charismatic church. The author makes a lot of general statements that need to be unpacked because the devil is in the detail with many of those statements. Particularly when it come to studying the scriptures quoted by the author. Before reading this book I would encourage you to read Ephesians 4 and I Corinthians 12 and 13 yourself before hearing the authors interpretation. These passages seem to be amongst the key ones that the author focusses on. Just be mindful that the author at times can get a bit self-righteous in his beliefs.

Highly recommend. Everyone Must listen!
Pentecostals/ charismatics / cessationists/ continuationists/ …every Christian must listen to this brilliant book. What an incredible case John MacArthur presents! I’m even going to listen to it all again soon. I became a Christian nearly 24 years ago… at age 20… after 20 years of atheism. I have “spoken in tongues” (according to current pentecostal traditions) -(just 10 days after my salvation /and water baptism) and been heavily involved in Pentecostal churches. I needed this book at the beginning of my walk with God. It has basically swayed me to being a cessationist. I have seen and experienced firsthand, most of the claims of pentecostal theology and my testimony is that something is wrong. Today’s (counterfeit) gifts are not the same as the Bible portrays. I think they come from our imagination, suggestibility, delusion, incorrect teachings, peer pressure, and demonic sources. I’ve experienced supernatural experiences from demons and from God. I believe God can & does sometimes still speak to people & still does supernatural things- but it’s not for any new biblical revelation. In my experience it was to correct/ lead me to obey God’s word/ plan for my life.

Faith building and helps with discernment
Initially I struggled with the authors voice and clarity but I pushed on and got used to it pretty fast.
Content was great and has helped me tremendously on my journey for answers based on sola scriptura.

A review from an Ex-Hillsong Leader
This book is for you , if your from the charismatic/Pentecostal denomination.
MacArthur outlines the history of the Charismatic Movement thoroughly and displays the intentions and motives behind each main character from the movement.
As a NOW Proud Cessationist myself - we believe that signs miracles and wonders can still happen!!! ; but not under the divine authority of man!!!!
Meaning the foundation of the church has laid its path for Gods Children to return back to God through Christ. There is no more need for prophets or apostles in today society to guide us. We have all we need with scripture!! For the sacrifices of the Apostles paved the way for us to know the risen Christ. There deaths have suffice and merit to the sovereign power they experienced when Jesus was here. The apostles have already done there Jobs!!!
If you are looking for a book to talk about the money membership of the Charismatic Movement - this isn’t it..Rather this book approaches the theological fallacies of the charismatics movement.
I want to encourage any ex-Hillsong congregants to read this book - I myself did not know the difference of Cessationism and Continuation. This is very important if you adore the Message of Jesus - as this will help discern what is true and what is not; your tempo will change torwards the Bible once you understand the Dichotomy between the 2.
A WARNING:
if you believe in the gifts of the spirit. If you are content with speaking In tongues and prophesying over people in your regular Sunday service - Don’t read this book (your bias will show) and you will get offended & You will become very uncomfortable.
A WAY OUT:
However if you are looking for the PURE essence of the error within the Charismatic Movement and feel like your on the fence and don’t know what the issue is? Or ever wondered why you can’t defend yourself as a Christian? This Book is for you. MacArthur outlines and explains the Why?
I pray for any ex charismatic/Pentecostal servant that they find this Book as an opportunity to know the REAL Jesus Christ - Through the Bible!!
May God be with you

Truth be told.
It is so good to hear the truth of the Gospel, it makes a vast difference to our salvation listening to and following the holy spirit to change us into a child for Christ, such a different message than that of the new age evangelical who's word is all about blessings for themselves and not centred on our Lord .
Thanks John for your wisdom knowledge and love for the Lord.
