"Strandingshistorier" er en samling af noveller om livet på den jyske vestkyst i 1800-tallet. Vi møder fiskerne, der sætter livet på spil, hver gang de bevæger sig ud på det nådesløse og lunefulde Vesterhav. Vi møder også de redningsfolk, der med jævne mellemrum risikerer sig selv for at redde fiskerne i land, når deres skibe taber kampen til bølgerne. Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen (1872-1907) var en dansk polarforsker, opdagelsesrejsende og forfatter. Han deltog i Den litterære Grønlandsekspedition (1902-1904) og var leder af Danmarks-ekspeditionen (1906-1908), der skulle udforske og kortlægge det allernordligste Østgrønland. Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen døde under ekspeditionen sammen med Jørgen Brønlund og Niels Peter Høeg Hagen. Mylius-Erichsen Land i den nordlige del af Østgrønland er opkaldt efter ham.
