About this listen

A five-time Moth GrandSLAM winner and bestselling novelist shows how to tell a great story - and why doing so matters.

Whether we realize it or not, we are always telling stories. On a first date or job interview, at a sales presentation or therapy appointment, with family or friends, we are constantly narrating events and interpreting emotions and actions. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big or small). He shows that anyone can learn to be an appealing storyteller, that everyone has something “storyworthy” to express, and, perhaps most important, that the act of creating and telling a tale is a powerful way of understanding and enhancing your own life.

For your pleasure

A lot of screen writing books give you structure or theology; this one teaches you to tell stories yourself

Inspiring and entertaining

Really enjoyed listening to this book. Fabulous insights from someone who has had an extraordinary life. Loved it so much I've ordered a copy of the physical book so it can sit on my shelf and I can refer back to it whenever I want to.

Excellent and practical - first half especially

I heard the author interviewed and was captivated. The book provided the models and detail I needed but is too long, too repetitive and frankly too directive. I believe the book could have been half as long and thereby twice as useful. It is still very useful and a good one to have on the shelf, but probably more helpful in print than audible.

Persist it is worth it.

Takes a while to get going but if you try the homework for life and put the heavy accent aside and focus on his recommendations I think we will all tell better stories. I will need to listen again and some cheat sheets would help.

You can easily skip through most of the book

This book is mostly stories from the writer with little useable content. He speaks through his nose for 10 straight hours and when you finally wade through the flood of examples, his thesis statement is 'I am right because others are wrong.' He does not provide any justification.

He naively states that his method of storytelling or even writing in general, is the only way to write. His main technique is free writing which is hardly newsworthy. He spends more time telling his own stories and mocking other methods than he does explaining his own.

A bit difficult to get through.

Overly American with little understanding that some things are common internationally, and not story worthy, or needs deeper explanation, if local (eg. relevance of specific universities etc.) It seems the conclusion is you must be totally self-involved to be a story writer with little understanding of things around you. The cringe is pretty high with these anecdotes, typical of a television singing competition contestant, that made me want to skip.
